White kitchen

The reasons people love them range from their design versatility and marketability to their association with cleanliness. No matter what style of all-white palette you choose, it’s important to keep in mind that the kitchen design layout is still the critical feature.

five kitchen design layouts.

At a basic level, any kitchen will fall into one of five kitchen design layouts. These are u-shaped, galley style, L-shaped, double L-shaped or a one-wall kitchen.

Most of the time, the choice of a kitchen layout design is driven by the space that is available for the kitchen and how it can be arranged. Remember that it has to meet the needs of the family while providing all the important required kitchen elements.

Totally White Contemporary Kitchen Layout

White kitchen is a fabulous option

White kitchens are all the rage now and have been for some time. Of course, they were super popular in the 1990s and then fell out of favor for a while before their current heydey. What makes them so enduring and popular?

We asked John Starck, owner of Showcase Kitchens.

“The not-so-recent trending of transitional design, after the popularity of the more ornate traditional design, offers a sophisticated and chic alternative to a primarily wood-based kitchen. White kitchens give a sense of spaciousness as well as being a perfect palette for decorative augmentation, which homeowners seem to enjoy,” Starck says. Essentially, an interior designer will call a pure white kitchen a blank canvas.

This particular airy kitchen combines a number of contemporary elements. including a subway tile backsplash. The result is a one-of-a-kind design, from the natural wood beams to the dark-colored countertop along the wall. The white cabinets create a neutral background.

The soaring ceiling makes the kitchen feel larger and sets off the style of the globe pendant light. Velvet upholstery on the bar seats adds a touch of softness. It’s a great example of how to meld different materials to spice up a kitchen designed with white cabinetry.

Elegant with a Touch of Glam

Elegant with a Touch of Glam

Transitional kitchen designs with clean lines and a fresh vibe are ideal for using an all-white palette. These are the types of decorating styles that themselves more naturally to an all-white kitchen, says Starck.

This white kitchen is a bit glamorous and feels inviting. This is thanks to the pendants above the marble island and the chandelier over the table. Other elements, such as the elegant accents on the cabinet glass, emphasize the feeling.

The way the quilting on the bar chairs picks up on the pattern of the backsplash is another. The dark wood floors and chair legs add depth and contrast nicely with the white cabinets.

Updated Traditional Style

Updated Traditional Style

With farmhouse, industrial and modern style trending, many homeowners prefer white kitchen ideas with a classic, traditional look. That said, today’s traditional kitchen designs are not your mother’s traditional white kitchen style.

This crisp white kitchen has plenty of traditional elements from the coffered ceiling to the moldings and overall classic white cabinets, but it still has fresh flair. The dramatic and rich-looking marble backsplash behind the cooktop and the updated classic lighting fixtures are just a couple.

These homeowners extended their white kitchen style into the dining area. That space has a handy and comfortable bench as well as plenty of closed storage.

Kitchen Neutral and Natural

Kitchen Neutral and Natural

Even among people who love a mainly white palette in the kitchen, not everyone wants absolutely everything to be white.

When spicing up white kitchens ideas, certain elements will provide more bang for your buck, says Starck.

“When it’s a white kitchen, it’s easy to introduce contrast. Usually, a center island or a subway tile backsplash behind the range is a great place to highlight the clean look of white and can act as a focal point as well,” he explains.

This particular kitchen has a large island whose base is a different color. This type of contrast is a bit softer because the color of the wood is more muted. Stainless steel appliances provide an added metallic accent and marble countertops with an undermount sink make it luxe.

Super Family Friendly.

Super Family Friendly

Unlike white carpeting and upholstery, white kitchens are totally family-friendly. In fact, their clean look makes it easier to spot areas that need cleaning. The white cabinets here are versatile and classic. Even the farmhouse sink is part of the white kitchen color scheme as is the white backsplash.

Here, the crisp white kitchen incorporates a bench seat on one side, which eliminates the need for a much larger table that can accommodate families with more children. The separate table is also easily replaced as the family grows and changes.

The set-up is also the perfect spot for children to do homework or other activities while meals are being prepared and still be close to mom or dad.

Sophisticated Style

White kitchen is a fabulous option

At the other end of the formality spectrum, white kitchens can be quite sophisticated as this one is. While the basic white cabinets are similar to other kitchens, the difference emerges in the detail that is included. Even the white backsplash has an interesting texture.

Stylish sink hardware, an elegant tray ceiling and dual chandeliers take it to the next level of refinement. Additions such as the chairs help determine the vibe, and these upholstered stools with studs and hardware add a lot of style. This elegant white kitchen is very chic when it comes to white kitchen ideas.

Cheery and Eclectic

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Starck says that a limited budget need not define how great the white kitchen looks.

“Appliance choices can help set the tone of a kitchen. Many appliance brands have a high-performance, luxury aesthetic with a more modest price point. This would be an easy way to maintain a high-end look. Although there are many color choices, blue and white is a great combination, even when blue is just an accent color.

Marvelously Modern

White kitchen is a fabulous option

In a demonstration of how white kitchen ideas are always good, this open concept design is modern and a little eclectic.

“There is no occasion where a white kitchen will not work unless the client prefers something different. Ultimately, taste is very personal, which includes color preference.”

This modern white kitchen has white cabinets blended with some dark wood on the island and wall unit. Dark soapstone countertops add contrast. The lighting is where the personality of the homeowners really shines in its modern touches. The two fixtures highlighted in neon yellow and a third over the table are bold touches.

An Old-School Feel

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Neutral is the perfect backdrop for a more old-school white kitchen like this one. Elegant crown moldings and a curved cornice above the cooktop are ideal highlights for a more traditional design.

Note the gorgeous marble countertops, especially on the island which is a different color. The serene white color palette is punctuated not just by the island top but by the industrial light fixtures above the island and the sink. The white cabinets are classic as is the white backsplash.

Today’s Style of Transitional

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Plenty of people aren’t really ready to commit to a more modern kitchen but they still want a space that feels fresh and up-to-date. This makes transitional design is a perfect compromise for white kitchen ideas.

This space combines traditional elements with fresher parts like the updated lighting, bar stools and materials used for the backsplash and countertops. Stainless steel appliances provide added pop.

Casual Serenity

White kitchen is a fabulous option

White kitchens lend themselves to creating a more serene open-concept space. This kitchen combines white and gray elements and the result is stunning yet with a very Zen feeling. The airy space is flooded with natural light.

In addition to the tile backsplash, the gray barstools and dining chairs add contrast without introducing a more vibrant or contrasting color. The white cabinets are an ideal choice in this design.

Contemporary With Some Shine

White kitchen is a fabulous option

White kitchens have been popular on and off for quite some time, certain elements can make them feel dated. “Shaker style doors tend to be overdone,” Starck says. “We’ve been doing more crafted doors by adding detail to the door profile. We’re increasingly adding more metal into projects in trims, door profiles and molding.”

The metallic accents tie in with the stainless steel appliances nicely.

A Focus on Accents

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Of course, there are those people who think that all-white equals boring. “There are probably unlimited ways of adding visual interest,” Starck says. “For example, by introducing metal into the door style. Homeowners can be creative with lighting, hardware, flooring and other decorative elements that personalize a white space,” he adds. Indeed, the metallic accent really amps up the white cabinets, especially for white or off-white Shaker cabinets.

Here are more examples of fabulous white kitchens from a variety of other designers that illustrate the different types of white kitchen design layouts that you can choose.

Traditional Glamour

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Traditionally styled with a bit of glam, this white kitchen uses details and accents to create distinctive architectural interest. This design is all about the details, like the hardware and metal strip along the edge of the countertop. Curved wooden accents on the white cabinets soften the look. Also, the side is more of a creamy white, which is also less stark.

The neutral patterned interior of the glass-fronted white cabinets keeps them from looking too stark. The lower cabinets hide all the kitchen essentials from view. Something like this is great inspiration for a section of any larger kitchen.

Minimalist

White kitchen is a fabulous option

When it comes to minimalist white kitchens, modern white kitchens can be streamlined and sleek without being boring. Bauformat’s white kitchen layout design manages to hide most of the critical functional elements and appliances behind the white cabinets, which have no hardware to spoil the look. White walls complete the seamless look of the floor to ceiling white design.

The appliance cubbyholes keep often-used items handy. A backlit, honeycomb-design backsplash adds interest and does not add color or disturb the serene vibe.

Double Islands

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Depending on the size of the space, many of the white kitchen design layout options can be customized to add even more workspace. This large white kitchen is L-shaped in basic layout. However, the extra space allowed for the addition of a second island with a prep sink and loads of countertop space.

Being able to stand between the two and cook provides more than enough workspace around the cooktop. We love the minimal addition of color from the greenish stone island tops. It really sets off the white cabinets and white backsplash.

Small Space Minimalism

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Small spaces can present kitchen design layout challenges but one way to make them feel more open is to go with a white design. Skewing toward minimalism with this type of high gloss custom cabinetry can also helps things feel less cramped.

Shenton Architects designed this small kitchen with enough sleek closed white cabinets to hide most everything but incorporated some open shelves for display and frequently used items like glassware. This also helps the white kitchen feel less boxy.

Added upper cabinetry makes the most of vertical space in this kitchen. Moreover, sleek stone subs in for backsplash tile and an undermount sink echoes the minimalism.

Terrific Transitional

White kitchen is a fabulous option

This transitional white kitchen has a very standard layout. However, it’s also a perfect example of how details are super important in a white kitchen.

Elements like the paneled columns and the glass sections on the upper white cabinets add interest. Adding some textural elements like the natural wood in the stools and the flooring injects some warm tones. The pendant lights lend brass accents and help emphasize that.

Farmhouse Blend

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Both farmhouse and industrial elements can be found in this transitional all-white kitchen. This one starts from a classic u-shaped white kitchen design layout.

The space has a number of elements that have made farmhouse style so popular. These include white subway tile, open shelving flanking the farmhouse sink and some shiplap-style detail on some of the white cabinetry. The lack of upper cabinetry on one wall really opens up the area.

On the industrial side, the range hood and pendants lend some edge to the space. Marble counters add a bit of luxury.

Modern Flair

White kitchen is a fabulous option

Hands down, a white kitchen is a fabulous option when it comes to creating a modern white minimalist kitchen. This example starts from a basic L-shaped white kitchen design layout. It has enough elements that add interest and warmth that it does not at all feel stark or uninviting.

First, the natural wood flooring goes a long way in making the white cabinets feel warmer. A couple of black elements like the oversized range hood and the bar cabinet break up the long expanse. Super wide drawers and the architectural window add some fresh differences to this white kitchen that has an open concept.
