Although very small, this apartment located in downtown Singapore has a very charming and airy interior. It consists of two main zones. One is the public area composed on a dining space, a living area and the kitchen. The other is the private zone which contains a bedroom, a bathroom and a utility room.

One of the clients’ requests was that the living space have a flexible structure so they can easily convert it into a guest room whenever guests spend the night. Design practice HUE Dwhich was responsible for the project, chose an interesting approach.

Instead of building partition walls or sliding doors to separate the spaces, the team chose to use fabric curtains. As a result, an enclosed sleeping area can be demarcated with long curtains inside the living area, becoming a room within a room. This strategy allows the welcoming guest room to stay cozy and intimate as well as connected to the rest of the space.

Even when the curtains are closed, the access to the outdoor balcony linked to the living area is not obstructed. The kitchen and the small dining space occupy the remaining space in the room and, because the curtains are usually closed only at night, this detail doesn’t obstruct the natural light coming into this portion of the room.

The dining area has a drop-leaf table pushed against a wall decorated with black and white images. The white on the walls, ceiling and floor maintains an airy and spacious feel throughout. It’s the light blue found on the other part of the room that brightens up the atmosphere and creates a fresh and vibrant mood.

The designers found different ways to use curtains, other than as window treatments. For example, the bedroom illustrates two ways in which these accent elements can be used to set a casual and inviting mood.

Curtains were used here on the windows and they don’t obstruct the light coming into the tiny bedroom but merely diffuse it a little bit. At night, these curtains provide privacy.

But what the curtains seen on the other side of the bed? Well, those have a different story. They were used to conceal a full-height open storage area. So instead of the usual wardrobe doors, the designers chose this option as a means to soften the look.

The clients wanted the bedroom to contain as much storage as possible which is why this unit was carefully designed to offer multiple storage options such as pen shelves, clothing racks, drawers and compartments.
