Use pencil, crayons, chalk; whatever you can find! This works as a guide so you can achieve the result you are looking for. You can of course do tie dye free form, but if it is your first time then it is always better to have something to work with.

Once you have drawn your design make sure you label it with the colours you want to use. Remember; colours are going to be overlapping each other. Because of this you need to put coordinating colours next to each other. For instance, if you were to put red and green next to each other then you are going to be left with a horrible brown shade. Instead, red would go well next to orange whilst green is more suited to blue.

Now you are going to paint two sections at the same time. Go for a shade slightly darker then your desired outcome. In order to give it the tie dye effect you need to use a dry paint brush over the edges. You will have to let this dry over night before you move onto the next step.
