Decorating a bachelor pad is easy because the only one who matters is you. But when you have a family to think about as well, coming up with a design that makes everyone happy becomes a real challenge. The secret to a family-friendly home is taking into consideration the needs and preferences of every person living there and harmoniously combining everything into a cozy and comfortable design. Here are a few tips that might come in handy:
You could opt for delicate materials if you live by yourself by when there are children in the house as well that’s not an option. Choose durable fabric or leather for the sofas and all furniture with upholstery in general.
Consider using removable covers for your chairs and couch so you can easily wash them when they get dirty. Have two sets so you can replace one with the other.
You can’t possibly have too much storage space when the kids have tons of toys and clothes and everyone’s things pile up in their rooms. So include storage wherever you can like in your coffee table, under the beds, above the doors, etc.
In areas such as the family room, you can either opt for hard floors or for durable and easy-to-clean rugs. You could, for example, use an outdoor rug indoors. The main idea is making things easier for the one who has to clean the room.
If you have young kids, don’t forget to keep the cables out of their reach, to cover the electrical outlets and to avoid having furniture with sharp edges. Fragile ornaments are out of the question as well so either get rid of them or put them up on a shelf where they can’t get their hands on them.
Home is where you feel most comfortable. So get some comfy poufs for the living room, put cushions on the sofa, use soft and friendly textures and warm colors. Adapt your design strategy to the room you’re decorating.
Those adorable drawings of your children look nice on the fridge but they’d look even better if you’d frame them and display them on a wall. You can put them in the kitchen, dining room, living area or in their own room.
