Fireplaces are, most often than not, really cozy addition to a room. They add warmth to space and not just in the literal sense of the word. Of course, style matters and you can actually easily customize a fireplace through your choice of materials. A steel fireplace surround would definitely add an industrial vibe to the entire space around it but wouldn’t necessarily look too cold or austere. To get a batter idea of all the design possibilities, check out the beautiful interior below.

Studio Searl Lamaster Howe Architects designed a beautiful retreat in Michigan and they included not just one but two steel fireplace surrounds throughout the spaces. This one features charred cedar accents in the background and the contrast is really beautiful but also subtle. Also, underneath the fireplace there’s a wood storage shelf.

This chic beach house designed by Brandon Architects also features a steel fireplace surround in its design. In this case the black steel contrasts with the white walls and the breezy and airy decor around it. As a result, the fireplace becomes the main focal point of this room. It’s placed right at the center of the living room, with open shelves and cabinets on either side and comfortable seating around it.

When designing this residence in Calgary, Canada, studios Beyond Homes and BBLOC chose a palette of contrasting materials and finishes. The focus is mainly on natural and reclaimed resources and one of the biggest focal points is the entire steel wall which incorporates the fireplace and the TV. It’s a very industrial-looking surface but it’s balanced out by the wooden flooring, the patterned area rugs and all the comfy furniture.

As many of the designs on this list will show, a fireplace surround can take over the entire wall or at least a big chunk of it and that always turns it into a major focal point for the entire room. Here studio Robert Hutchison Architecture took advantage of the high ceiling and large windows to introduce this massive steel fireplace surround into the room. While it does stand, it doesn’t overwhelm the space.

This is a residence which occupies a site that had been originally declared as unusable for a house. However, studio Sturgess Architecture didn’t take no for an answer and managed to find a way to embrace the difficult site conditions and to use the unique topography in their favor. Part of their design strategy was to incorporate materials such as weathered steel into the project. They used extensively for the exterior of the structure but also inside where we have this beautiful fireplace surround.

When asked to design and build this residence, the architects at Aidlin Darling Design faced an interesting challenge. Their clients wanted this place to become a seamless blend of styles, to be a hybrid between an urban industrial artist’s studio and a cozy rural retreat. This large stainless steel surround (which is actually an entire wall) is one of the defining elements for the industrial style.

A super tall fireplace surround made out of steel panels sits right at the center of this wall, going all the way up to the ceiling and even having a a pitched top section. It contrasts with the two large windows and also with the crisp white walls and the white ceiling. This allows it to stand out and at the same time to put an emphasis on the height of this entire space. Check out homestolove to find out more about this amazing project.

It’s surprising how warm and inviting this home manages to look like given the palette of materials and finishes featured in its design. There are polished concrete floors, concrete walls, neutral colors and this imposing steel fireplace surround. Still, the place looks super cozy. Although a steel fireplace surround will always add an industrial vibe to the whole space around it, there are plenty of variations to play with. For instance, this is a really cool and modern-looking fireplace which didn’t really need to be wrapped in stainless steel but definitely look more impressive this way. It’s part of a residence designed by Chad Oppenheim, Rios Clementi Hale Studios and Lorraine Letendre.

This beautiful and also a bit rugged-looking fireplace fits right in the contemporary mountain retreat created by Studio 80 Interior Design. You can see the rustic wall detail behind the steel fireplace surround and also the pattern used here in order to create a nice transition between the different surfaces and materials.

Here you can see a really nice blend of rustic and contemporary interior design details, all beautifully put together by studio Alexander Design Group. One of the most prominent features in the living area would have to be the fireplace, specifically because of the steel panels which give it a very imposing and impenetrable look.

There’s also another really beautiful interior design that fits perfectly into our list. It’s something that Vanguard Studio put together when designing a Mediterranean-style home in Texas. As you can see, this double-height living area is super airy and inviting, with lots of different textures and finishes spread across the room. The fireplace is the central piece which brings it all together and it looks amazing.
