Decorating the house and getting it ready for Halloween is the most fun part for a lot of people. Sure, kids enjoy to go trick or treat and to shop for costumes but that’s a whole other thing. Let’s go back to those fun and spooky decorations. Ever considered making your own? Homemade Halloween Decorations are so much fun and interesting than the store-bought ones and this way you can also involve the whole family.

Decorate some pumpkins.

Decorate some pumpkins with spider webs. Make them out of twine and sequins. Start with a mark at the center of the pumpkin and draw six small dots radiating outward from there. Use some small brads and secure them in place. Weave wire in and out to create a star pattern. Then add black wire around the perimeter of the web.{found on whimseybox}.

Decorate your pumpkins with buttons. First write a word or a phrase across the pumpkin. Then use a hot glue gun to attach the buttons on top of the word. Paint the stem of the pumpkin black, let the paint dry and then tie a cute ribbon in a bow around the stem. Secure it with glue.

There no need to carve the pumpkins and get dirty. You can give them a chic makeover using black and white acrylic paint and a few gold round studs. Make a striped pumpkin by first painting white stripes on every other ridge or section. Let it dry and then fill in the orange areas with black paint. Use the studs on a small pumpkin. Hang bunting and garlands.

Making this burlap bunting is super simple. You can spell out Happy Halloween or anything else you want. You’ll need burlap, letter stencils, acrylic paint, twine and glue. Cut burlap rectangles and paint the letters on each one. Place a thin line of hot glue across the top edge and fold over to make a seam. Thread the twine through the top of each square.{found on brit}.

This ghost garland is both funny and scary but, most of all, it’s adorable. It’s also super simple to make. You need a strand of white lantern lights, white cotton fabric, white string and scissors. Cut 14” fabric squares, fold them into a triangle and cut the tip off to make a hole in the center. Thread the light through the hole. Secure the lantern back in place and wrap the fabric around the sphere. Tie a piece of string around the bottom and draw ghostly eyes and a mouth.{found on site}.

Paper crafts.

Make a Halloween bouquet to display in a vase on your mantel. Make pom-pom flowers from tissue paper and book pages. Each petal is a scalloped circle folded in half and then in half again. Hole punch the rear point close to the edge and slide the petals onto floral wire. When you have enough, bend the wire and twist so petals are trapped at the top in the loop.{found on savedbylovecreations}.

Use paper bags to make luminaries. You can either cut or hole punch your design using stencils or by free-handing it. An ever simpler solution is to use a sharpie to draw faces or other designs on the bags. Stamps would also work.

Tin cans.

Tin cans can also be used to make some lovely luminaries. Here’s how: first you have to fill the can with water and place it the freezer. When the water is frozen, draw an image on word on the can with a sharpie and then place the can on a folded towel. Take a hammer and a nail and puncture the design. Decorate with bats.

Make foam bats and hang them in the trees around your house. You’ll need black craft foam, scissors, fishing line, googly eyes, craft glue and a hole punch. Trace and cut out the bats using a template. Add the googly eyes with a dab of glue and then punch a hole at the bottom to add the fishing line.{found on hgtv}.

Also using a template, trace the bats onto black construction paper or cardstock. Cut out the bats and use scotch tape to stick them inside the lamp shade. Make sure they’re firmly in place and nowhere near the light bulb.{found on younghouselove}.

Rock-o-lanterns.

Here’s another simple and fun project you can let the kids handle. Gather some large rocks and also get some painter’s tape, orange paint, a jar, glue and a paint brush. Tape off a face for each of the rocks. Mix the paint with white glue and let the kids paint the rocks. Let them dry for a few minutes and add another coat.{found on notimeforflashcards}.

Give eyes to the trees.

So you have a large and beautiful tree in your front yard and you’d like to somehow use it for your Halloween décor. How about some huge googly eyes? You can make them out of two white beach balls. Color in the eyes with a sharpie. Get them to stay in place with a little bit of twine.{found on princessandthefrogblog}.

A themed doormat.

Making a spooky doormat for this occasion is actually really easy. You need a plain doormat, adhesive stencil film, black acrylic paint and a stencil brush. Print out the letters, in this case B, O, O. place adhesive stencil paper on top and cut around each letter. Peal the backing off the stencil and adhere to the doormat. Add 2-3 coats of paint and allow it to dry before peeling off the stencil.{found on celebrations}.

A spooky front entrance.

Turn the front of your house into a monster this Halloween. Trace out your design for the teeth and eyes on foam board. Cut it out with the blade of a hand saw. Then use flat white paint on everything. Add the eyes and teeth outlines with acrylic paint. Secure the pieces with screws.{found on niftythriftythriving}.

Make treat bags and gifts for the kids.

Fill surgical gloves with candy and treats and offer them as gifts to the kids. Once filled, tie them with craft ribbon. They’re great for older kids but also for adults.{found on queenscardcastle}.

Make a painter spider web vase to use as a candy bowl. You’ll need a glass vase or bowl, 3D frost gloss enamel writer, rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs. First clean the glass with alcohol. Then draw your spiderwebs around the vase using the 3D glass writer. Keep a napkin handy to wipe the tip of the paint bottle clean. Allow the paint to dry and cure for 4 days. Then bake the vase and you’re done.{found on madiganmade}.

Make spooky lolly pops that look like spiders, ghosts or jack-o-lanterns.. for the spiders cut off the top of a black garbage bag to make a long strip and cut it into squares.Take three pieces of black chenille craft wire and snip them in half to make the legs.

For the jack-o-lanterns use orange tissue paper and green chenille craft wire which you wrap around once or twice.

The ghosts can be made out of white plastic bags and a few tissues. Hold them tight with an opalescent craft wire. Add the facial features with a marker.{found on apartmenttherapy}.

For these adorable treats you’ll need black pillow boxes, sturdy black card, googly eyes, craft glue and candy. Assemble the boxes. Fold the black card, place the box at the crease and draw a bat wing. Cut it out and use it asa template to make all the other bat wings. Apply craft glue down the center crease of each bat wing and attach it to the back of each pillow box. Glue the googly eyes and set aside to dry.{found on tonyastaab}.

Use plain orange cups or bowls, a black marker, clear treat bags and green or black ribbon to make these cute things. Draw faces on the cups and then fill them with treats, candy, etc. place them in the clear bags and tie ribbon at the top.

Another simple and fun idea is to cut out black cats and spiders out of cardstock and attach them to paper bags just like tags. Write down the names of those who will receive the treat bags using a white pen.

Re-purpose a mason jar and turn it into a candy corn treat jar. You’ll need glass paints, tape, twine, cardstock, washi tape, a sponge brush and candy corn or some other fall treat. Divide the jar in three using tape. Paint the bottom section bright orange, let it dry, then paint the top section white, let it dry and fill in the middle area using yellow paint. Attach cardstock to the lid to make it more colorful and then create and attach the tag.{found on oneartsymama}.

Mason jars are also excellent for all sorts of fun, themed projects. For example, make some mummy mason jars. First give them a coat of gold spray paint. Let it dry overnight. Then wrap rubber bands around the jars. Spray them with black paint, let it dry, then remove the bands and attach the eyes.{found on itallstartedwithpaint}.

Milk Jug Ghosts.

If you happen to have some of these milk jugs handy then you can turn them into fun decorations. The project is so simple you can even let the kids do it. Clean out the jugs and then let the kids draw out the faces with a pencil. When the design is complete, outline it using a marker. On the opposite side, cut a 3-sided opening flap and place a few rocks in the jugs to weigh them down. Also, add part of a string of lights and then lead them to the next opening.{found on isavea2z}.

Soup Cans.

Don’t have any milk jugs? Maybe you have some empty soup cans. You can use those to make some cute Halloween decorations. You need 3 different sizes cans, orange paint in several shades, fake leaves, corks or empty spools, floral wire and glue. Paint the cans, let them dry and then wrap the floral wire around a pencil to make curly vines. Attach the leaves to the bottom of the cork and glue the cork to the top of the can along with the vine. At the end, wrap some raffia around the cans to make them look pretty.{found on cupcakecuppy}.

Dress up the dining table.

Make a drink cooler from a large pumpkin. Cut out the top portion of the pumpkin, hollow the center and put ice inside. Then just keep your beer bottles or other drinks in there to keep them cool.{found on modcloth}.

Balloon ghosts.

What could be easier than simply blowing up some balloons and painting ghost faces on them? Super quick and super easy. Not all the balloons have to be white. You can also get some orange ones or even black ones but you’ll also need a white pen in this case.{found on trendenser}.

Set up a party table or a small bar. Make poison labels for the bottles and bat tags for the cupcakes. Just print out the designs, cut out the pieces and have fun decorating with them.{found on abeautifulmess}.

Put all the candy and small treats in pedestal jars or bowls like the ones you see here. Use black tape to give them faces. Cut out eyes, noses, mouths and even eyebrows. They look so lovely and colorful you just want to eat them.

Special treats.

Make special treats for Halloween. For example, make some of these cute candy corn brownies. Use refrigerated pie crust, brownie mix and, once the pies are baked, push a candy corn pumpkin or regular candy corn on the top. You’ll make a lovely pumpkin patch.{found on crazyforcrust}.

Here’s a cute and fun idea: make mummy dogs. You’ll need crescent rolls, hot dogs and mustard. First cut a crescent roll in half and pull on it gently. Wrap it around the hot dog and then bake for 13-15 minutes at 375 degrees. Add small dots of mustard for the eyes.{found on apumpkinandaprincess}.

And surely you must also prepare a few special drinks as well. Use small jars with pierced lids and insert straws down their center. Attach some of these cute orange and black tags.{found on amyatlas}.

Spooky straws.

To make these Halloween-themed straws you need orange and black straws, character rings, hot glue and scissors. But the ring part off the rings leaving the character. Glue the characters to the straws and that’s about it.{found on blissfulroots}.
