Open concept kitchens have become the new norm in most modern and contemporary homes. The advantage of having a large open space to work with is very alluring and opens the doors to a lot of interesting design possibilities. Architects and designers are constantly working to make the most of every bit of space a project offers and open concept kitchens make things quite easy. Let’s check out some of the cool ideas that some of them came up with.
Architecture studio Fraher and Findlay were asked to design a large detached Edwardian house and the owners wanted it to be seamlessly connected to the outdoors. One of ways in which the architects managed to make that happen was by creating an open concept kitchen which overlooks the garden. A series of glass doors can be opened up to connect the indoor and the outdoor, making the transition between them seamless.
A similar concept was used here by Didonè Comacchio Architects. This open kitchen is connected to a terrace and the transition between them is quite smooth, especially given the style similarities between the floors. It’s nice that the transition is gradual. The actual kitchen area leads into the dining space and then outside.
An open concept kitchen can suit a variety of different styles. The layouts can also differ, depending on the case. Usually the kitchen is connected to the dining area and often the living room as well and together they form a large and open common area. In this case, studio Peter Sergeev Architecture + Design placed the leisure and sitting areas separately.
Studio GM Arquitecto designed a very beautiful family home in Mahon, Spain, one which followed a very specific layout right from the start. A large unobstructed open plan for all the common areas had to be implemented and that of course included the open concept kitchen. There’s a huge wall that opens up and connects this area to the outdoor terrace. A freestanding fireplace acts as a space divider and a focal point.
When tasked with the renovation of a 1920s villa Italy, studio Nomade Architettura Interior design decided to open up the spaces and to create a fresh and airy ambiance throughout. They were careful to maximize the natural light throughout the house which turned out to be tricky in some cases. The kitchen became an open space, seamlessly connected to the dining area.
This is such a wholesome-looking space. It’s a combo between kitchen and dining room spaces with cabinets and appliances occupying one side of the room and stylish dining tables placed on the other side. Large windows bring in tons of natural light and the patterned floor tiles add a rustic vibe to the room. Everything is nicely tied together by the fireplace placed at the back of the space. This was a project by architect Pia Karin Spreafico.
Having the kitchen island and dining table placed in a line looks really cool in this case. The layout of the space was a bit challenging but ended up inspiring a great interior design. Notice how the kitchen furniture elegantly extends out into the dining area along with the long and horizontal window. This amazing design was done by architecture studio Anderman Architects based in Israel.
A very clean and modern aesthetic was chosen for this open concept kitchen and the spaces surrounding it. That residence that they’re a part of was designed and built by Studio RHE in the Suffolk countryside, in the UK. The exposed wooden beams are an interesting focal point for this entire area, adding color and texture to the otherwise neutral and minimalistic decor.
This right here is a single-family home inside a space which used to be an old carpentry shop. The converted space has been reorganized and no features this very chic open concept kitchen which a glossy white island and black cabinetry. The architects and designers at Tixa managed to also preserve a bit of the style and charm of the old artisan building which makes the entire house look amazing.
Transitioning between one area to another can often be tricky even when we’re talking about an open floor plan. That’s why we find this beautiful kitchen to be quite ingeniously designed. the color palette chosen for the kitchen and the adjacent spaces allows each section to seamlessly transition into the others. It’s something that studio Fraher and Findlay definitely managed to put an emphasis on when creating this project.
Exposed concrete was used all throughout this contemporary house, inside and out. Making these cold grey surfaces look natural and actually homely was tricky but not exactly difficult as studio Bedaux de Brouwer Architects expertly used natural wood to balance out the whole design. The kitchen and dining area combo look exquisite and we love the minimalism of the space. White black, concrete and wood all work together harmoniously.
A black and white combo complemented by natural wood accents also suits this open concept kitchen. What’s interesting in this case is that the kitchen transitions not only into the adjacent dining area but also the spaces beyond the arched doorway. This creates a nice flow between different areas of the house and allows the common areas to always be accessible. The interior design was done by Kristina Lastauskaitė-Pundė.
