Natural Fall Decorating: Bring the Outside Inside this Season
Natural Fall Decorating: Bring the Outside Inside this Season
Nov 16, 2024 9:39 AM

There’s something about the fall season that is beautifully organic and earthy in nature, don’t you think? What with the pumpkins starting to pop up everywhere, the corn stalks starting to yellow, and the leaves transitioning into their blazing departure from the trees, it makes sense that this season of the harvest largely involves Mother Nature. Why not bring some of that natural flair indoors this year?

And, bonus, natural décor is often less expensive and quick to put up…leaving you more time to relax with a comfy blanket and a good book.

Leaves on the Table.

Whether you’ve got a fireplace or not, you can imbue your space with fiery warmth and cheer with the beautiful reds, oranges, and golden yellows of fall leaves. Stick them in a vase on any table – coffee table, side table, end table, entry table – and you have instant, natural fall décor.

Birch Logs on any Flat Surface.

We love this simple, earthy idea. Birch logs cut to similar heights (about 12”) and stood on end on any flat surface gives off the impression of a mini indoor forest. Throw on some silk fall leaves, and you’ve really recreated a natural feel.

Greens in the Dining Room.

Nothing looks fresher than a vase or two filled with fresh autumn flowers (mums, anyone?) or greens. Put a bouquet on the dining room table over a burlap table runner for simply charming fall décor.

Dried Corn on a Garland.

The speckled colors of Indian corn are a perfect complement to natural fall décor, so why not use these pieces as your jumping-off point this year? Stacking in a basket or strung on wire for garland, dried corn is a fun and lovely way to bring nature inside.

Fruits & Vegetables on the Mantel.

Gourds are in abundance at this time of year, and they are a fantastic way to bring nature inside while you’re decorating for the season. But other fruits are great for fall, too – apples, oranges, and berries. Get creative as you assemble your mantel combinations!

Acorns in the Living Room.

While a bowlful of acorns on the coffee table is a literal way to use acorns in your seasonal décor, try thinking outside the box this fall. A rustic acorn-framed mirror above the fireplace, for example, provides warmth and a charmingly subtle nod to the season.

Giant Pinecones in the Fireplace.

I know, I know…we had you at “giant pinecones.” But when it’s not quite cold enough to get a fire blazing in the fireplace, you can still add warmth to the room with some natural elements. Giant pinecones are log-like in size but unique in their texture.

Branches on the Walls.

Decorating with branches can actually be apropos and chic year-round. The sky is the limit with these raw, organic limbs. We’ve seen branches in vases, which is a fun way to add height to a vignette, but consider incorporating your branches not as a side but as the star. You might be surprised to find just how happy it makes you to go out on a decorating limb! (Pun totally intended.)

Grasses in a Pot.

Harvest some beautiful amber waves of grain (or any hue, for that matter) and incorporate them into your seasonal vignette. They provide a lovely textural element and oft-needed height. Plus, grasses are just so soothingly pretty.

Landscape Art…Anywhere.

So it doesn’t exactly come from nature, but it’s reminiscent, so we’ll count it. Try changing things up on your walls by hanging a fall seasonal piece of art. An oil painting, watercolor, or even oversized fall photograph will help transform your décor space into an au natural abode. Bonus: Wall art takes up no floor space!
