As time passes styles and trends come and go which is something that applies to just about anything including furniture. What would have been perceived as being modern at one point is now retro so even the meaning of the term can change based on the context. But what does modern furniture nowadays look like? Well, what better way to answer that question than with a few relevant examples.
This spectacular piece is called Root and is a modern lamp with a unique design. Its base is actually a natural root which means each individual piece is unique and unlike any other. It also means that the overall shape and dimensions vary for each product. The sculptural base looks beautiful when paired with very simple lampshades. This is not only a lamp but also a decoration and a sculpture.
The Sommelier is another beautiful modern piece with a very suggestive name. This is a wall-mounted wine rack designed to hold the bottles in a horizontal position which means it can only accommodate certain specific types of bottles with suitable shapes. It is however versatile in other ways. The design is simple and the rack looks very much like a weathered piece of wood that magically stands upright.
The Font sofa system was originally designed for Nationalmuseum located in Stockholm to mark its re-inauguration in 2018. The sofa was designed by Matti Klenell and is based on simple forms and simplicity. It has a graphical look, featuring a round backrest and a curved seat and it’s possible for two of them to be placed side by side in order to create a larger seating arrangement.
Part of the Brioni series, this sofa has a super soft and plushy appearance. Originally, the design applied only to outdoor pieces but the collection was redesigned for indoor use and this is the result. The sofa is available with fabric or leather upholstery and features soft polyester padding. It’s lightweight and versatile, not mention incredibly comfortable. At the same time, it has a playful look which is often appreciated when it comes to modern and contemporary interior design in general.
There are also modern furniture pieces that remain true to classic design and that gives them a retro and at the same time timeless look. This right here is the Poltrona Frau armchair. The original model was designed in 1919 and 100 years later, in 2019, it has been revisited and reimagined in a slightly more modern way but while maintaining the original spirit and charm of the piece.
It’s not just modern furniture that can look really exquisite but decorations and accent pieces as well. This right here is the beautiful Rips vase designed by Carina Seth Andersson. It’s crafted from glass mouth-blown by Venetian master craftsmen and it has a rather simple-looking design but at the same time it’s infused with rich details. It’s a sculptural piece with a strong presence and lots of character.
Lamps and lighting fixtures, in general, are a very important part of the interior design and are sometimes overlooked. A beautiful and eye-catching fixture can transform an entire room. What better example than the Soffi lamps. These wonderful and delicate globes are crafted by Venetian artisans and their design and shape is very significant. They capture the exact moment when the blowing technique gives the glass its form and as such this is truly a magical piece.
While the bed is usually the centerpiece of the bedroom, what we often give less importance to is the headboard. The two pieces coexist and as such it’s important for them to complement each other. the Yvette headboard is designed by Chiara Andreatti and features a delicate and feminine appearance defined by curved lines and soft forms. At the same time, the headboard makes use of black metal tubing and black lacquered wood which help to give its strong and sound look.
The Rue headboard is another example of stylish, modern furniture and is a perfect companion for the matching Mos bench. The design in both cases is very clean and simple with visible Nordic influences. The rounded shapes add a feminine and delicate allure to the design and the soft padded surfaces and the colors add a sophisticated touch to both of these pieces.
The Costela armchair is very interesting in the sense that it’s a very elegant piece but at the same time maintains a casual appearance. It also has a 1950’s inspired look and it crafted using natural materials. The frame is made of wood and features a series of curved ribs that embrace the seat and the backrest, giving the chair a very distinctive look. It also has large soft cushions for added comfort and it’s a versatile piece that would suit a variety of different spaces and interiors.
