Somewhere in Vilnius, Lithuania’s largest city and capital, there’s a lovely and quaint house that’s easy to fall in love with. The house was designed by Prusta in 2016 yet doesn’t have the typical characteristics of contemporary structures. The thing that sets apart this 120 square meter residence from its neighbors and other such homes is the manner in which it manages to incorporate a series of contradictory trends and contrasting design elements and to make everything look harmonious.

This is truly an eclectic house, one which seamlessly blends several different styles and trendsOne of the main goals when designing the interior was to create open and uncluttered spaces

We’re particularly charmed by the selection of materials used throughout the house which includes aged wood and natural wood with a gray tint, marble, stainless steel, glass, black metal as well as a variety of soft textiles. The dominant chromatic palette is a collection of warm color tones. A series of oriental pieces (mostly rugs) serve as highlights as well as sources of color and pattern for the spaces.

The designers wanted to keep spaces as simple and uncluttered as possible without diminishing their comfort and pleasant ambiance. This was an interesting challenge considering everything that we mentioned so far. In order to maintain a minimalist design approach, all of the highlights were framed by walls, ceilings and floors in cool shades and with neutral appearances.

The resulted design approach was focused on minimalism with a traditional twist. The spaces were furnished with a combination of old and new pieces, a blend of modern, industrial and antique/ rustic/ traditional accents. Check out this tall bookcase which doubles as a space divider. Its black metal frame is complemented by an abundance of colors distributed on the shelves.

The open space living and dining area sits under the sloped yet tall wooden ceiling and has large windows that let in lots of natural light and at the same time connect the interior spaces to their surroundings. The views are not extraordinary and don’t reveal breathtaking panoramas yet they’re very tranquil and charming in their own way.

All of the spaces are furnished with a mixture of old and new pieces. Old cupboards, tables and antique chairs are paired with modern wall units and a variety of other contrasting elements. The kitchen, for example, features an industrial hood and stainless steel cabinets and worktops which reflect the client’s inclination toward restaurant cuisine and professionalism. The kitchen layout is simple, practical and well-suited for the space.

The bedrooms too are designed in a contradictory yet complementary manner. Their interiors are a harmonious blend of functional and decorative. The master bedroom suite has a concrete ceiling and matching walls complemented by light-colored wooden flooring, full-height windows, minimalist white wall units and an antique wooden chest. Industrial light fixtures, an oriental area rug and ethnic pattern highlights complete the decor.

The en-suite bathroom is also defined by simplicity. It has a tiled accent wall, floor tiles in a color similar to that of the wood used in the bedroom and a solid wood vanity that holds a metal bowl sink. It’s separated from the bedroom by sliding glass doors.

The children’s bedroom are similar in style to the master suite. They’re small but cozy and welcoming despite the bare concrete walls and ceilings. They too have rugs with eye-catching patterns and colors, long fabric curtains for the full-height windows and quirky color accents.
