It is really simple to hand knit your very own arm cushion cover. You just need some yarn, a pair of willing arms and about 45minutes! Arm knitting for beginner creates really beautiful, large scale stitches, which add great texture and comfort to your soft furnishings. You can choose neutral or strong colours, depending upon the colour palette of your room!
3x 300g Skeins of Bernat Mega Bulky Yarn in Light Grey Heather
There are a few stages to arm knitting and the first is casting on! You will be using all three skeins of yarn at the same time, so take the ends and hold them together.
First tie a slipknot about a metre from the end of the three yarns and put your right hand through so that it sits on your right arm. Make sure that the tail is on the right and the working end of the yarn is on the left!
To make your next stitch, you need to make a loop in your yarn, with the working end of the yarn on top and finishing on the left.
Now, put your right hand through the yarn, grab hold of the working end of the yarn and pull it through!
Take this new loop and put your right hand through it so that it sits on your right arm, next to the first stitch. Adjust so that the stitch is even. Continue to add new stitches to your right arm until you have 10 stitches!
Once you have cast on 10 stitches, you can begin to knit! Place the working yarn over your right thumb and hold onto it with your right hand.
Using your left hand, pull the first stitch off your right arm, over your right hand.
Twist the loop a half turn clockwise and slip it over your left hand so it sits on your left arm. The turn ensures that the working yarn is in the right place!
Finish knitting the row until all 10 stitches have been transferred to your left arm.
To continue knitting simply repeat by putting the working yarn over your left thumb, then pulling the first stitch over your left hand.
This time turn the loop a half turn counter-clockwise then slip it over your right hand so it sits on your right arm. Once you have knitted all 10 stitches so that they have been transferred to your right arm, you will have knitted 2 rows! Keep going until you have knitted 20 rows!
Now you have finished your 20 rows of knitting, you need to cast off! Knit two stitches from your right arm to your left arm!
Take the first stitch you knitted and pull it over the second stitch. Know knit across one more stitch from your right arm and then repeat the process.
Keep going knitting until there is just one stitch remaining on your left arm. Trim the working end of the yarn so that is about one metre long.
Carefully slip the last stitch off of your left arm and pull the working end of the yarn through the loop. Pull gently to tighten and finish binding off.
Now you have a lovely arm knitted rectangle, you will need to make it a bit more cushion cover shaped! Start by putting side by side the top (on the right) and the bottom (on the left) of the rectangle of arm knitting with the knit side facing you. Using the yarn that you finished binding off with (this should be on your left), put it under and through the first V of the knitting on the right edge.
Now take the yarn and put it under and through the first V of the knitting on the left edge. Keep repeating this under and through weaving of yarn until you have woven together the edges of the knitting. Take the remaining yarn and weave the end through the purl side of the knitting to secure. Repeat to finish off another side of the cushion cover and then on the final side of the cushion cover you just need to partially join the two edges, leaving a gap in the middle that you can stuff your cushion through! Just join the top three Vs and the bottom three Vs. Leaving the four stitches in the middle as the gap to fit the cushion through.
