With all the ingenious discoveries and inventions that we’ve witnessed in the past years, you can basically expect almost anything to be created. In the field of interior design and furniture manufacturing, modern creations are made out of all sorts of unexpected materials. For example, did you know that you can make furniture out of cardboard? Well, here are some examples that will convince you.
It might not sound very practical at first, but a cardboard bed is quite a functional piece of furniture. This is the Paperpedic Bed and it’s a 100% recyclable piece. It’s made from a system of folded paper panels which connect and form a bed base on which the mattress stands. Interestingly, this bed is also very strong and has a load capacity of approximately a ton. And if you also add the drawers you get a stunning bed with lots of storage underneath.
But cardboard furniture is not just intriguing and designed to be a fashion statement. It’s also a very practical alternative for regular furniture. In fact, it’s a perfect option for students. Students need furniture but it’s not practical for them to have to take everything with them when they move out. So cardboard furniture makes things easier. This desk is made of 95% recycled cardboard. Assembly doesn’t require any tools or glue and the piece is also affordable.{found on designboom}.
Cardboard furniture can also be used for bigger projects, such as a shop for example. This is a second hand shop that was designed by Dutch practice BYTR Architects and that can be found in the Netherlands. For this project, the architects decided to try a more ingenious approach so they used cardboard pallets to make the furniture. This kept everything within a budget and the result was also very interesting.
But enough with all these serious projects for now. I’m sure that you already thought of the possibility of using cardboard to make something more fun. Well, here’s a nice example. This is a cardboard playhouse. It’s designed for kids by Liya Mairson and that also comes with another great advantage. The playhouse is also space-friendly so you can use it in small rooms without having to worry it will take up all the space.
Having a cardboard playhouse must be lots of fun but life is also about having to work in order t enjoy all the nice things afterwards. So how about we now turn our attention to something more work-related? An office seems like a good idea. We have the perfect example to start with. This is the office of a company called Nothing. It can be found in Amsterdam and it impressed with the fact that here almost everything is made out of cardboard.
Of course, there are other similar offices that are just as interesting as this one. Take for example this space. It was designed by Liddy ScheffknechtandArmin B. Wagner, and everything you see inside was made out of nothing but cardboard and tape. It’s a very interesting approach that makes work less boring and more fun.
