There’s something very stylish and very enjoyable about a white brick wall, whether it’s in the context of a bedroom, a living room or any other space. The concept is refreshingly simply and has a Scandinavian vibe which results in some really beautiful and timeless decors. Whether it’s just one wall or all of them, you can always consider them an important design feature and even compile the whole interior decor around them and the vibe they create.
Bricks can be made from a variety of different materials and they’re of several different types. They’re generally appreciated for the fact that they’re less expensive than other building materials and they’re quite durable as well. There are two main types of clay bricks based on the manufacturing process: sun-dried and burnt bricks.
As you can easily guess, these bricks are left to dry in the sun. While that’s easier to do than having to dry them in a kiln, it does mean that sun-dried bricks are less durable and less resistant overall. They have less fire and water resistance and they’re not recommended for permanent structures. They are however a good option if you’re building something temporary.
These are clay bricks that are dried in large kilns and that makes them stronger and more durable than sun-dried bricks. They’re of four different types: first class, second class, third class and fourth class bricks and the quality gets lower the bigger the number is. The fourth class bricks are of very poor quality and they’re not even used for construction purposes. They’re over burnt and instead they’re crushed and used in the manufacturing of concrete.
Not all bricks are made of clay. These ones are made using fly ash and water. They’re more resistant to freeze than clay bricks and considered better overall. They contain a higher concentration of calcium oxide and they’re also called self-cementing bricks. An advantage in this case is also the fact that fly ash bricks are lightweight.
These are bricks made using concrete and the biggest advantage in using them is the fact that they can be manufactured on site. They can also be made in various different colors as well as in different sizes as needed.
These are bricks with high strength, increased frost resistant, acid resistance and low porosity. They’re a great fit for basements where the environment is usually damp but they’re quite versatile and can be commonly used in lots of different types of constructions.
As you can tell, this is a type of brick made of sand and lime. They’re not particularly popular for anything other than ornamental details on buildings and they’re not commonly used as a main construction material.

There’s much to say about bricks walls in relation to building, both in regards to the exterior as well as the interior design. White brick exteriors typically have a timeless look and suit traditional houses like this one for instance. They give the house a classic look but don’t have a particularly rustic or dated appearance.
We should also recognize the versatility of bricks as a construction material. A white brick exterior in particular can be incorporated into all sorts of designs, including that of a contemporary home like this one designed by studio Coats Homes. It’s simple and with a subtle classic vibe wich the brick pattern really helps to emphasize.
If you’re planning a fresh and modern interior design for a living room for example, having a brick pattern on all of the walls can be a bit too much. An accent wall however is a whole different story. If a fireplace goes into the mix as well the effect the white bricks have on the décor is event stronger. Check out this stylish loft design by studio JSW Interiors if you need some inspiration. It’s really bright and airy but it’s also very welcoming.
If you want the bricks to stand out more and you want to put an emphasis on the pattern and texture that they add to the room, go with a whitewashed finish. This way you get an eclectic look that’s a little bit rustic but also quite modern-looking. Check it out in this cozy living room by Wolfe Rizor Interiors.
A white brick wall is also an excellent way to add depth and style to a staircase. This one serves as a simple backdrop but really helps to draw the eye to the back of the room and past the staircase. This initial effect then invites one to pay more attention to the details around it, like the cleverly integrated storage system underneath the staircase. This is a design by Specht Architects.
The white brick wall in this bedroom has this cool worn look which gives it a lot of character. The furniture in the room and even the floor are white which creates a very crisp and pure look. The accent colors are pastels and that gives the room a casual and relaxing appearance. Check out atelierrueverte for more images of this place.
In the case of this house designed by Charles DeLisle the role of the white brick wall is to frame the fireplace and to create a cozy and at the same time serene and fresh vibe. It does all that and more and it’s amazing how something so simple can have such an impact on a space.
Brick walls, in general, are appreciated for the texture they add so a nice idea is to highlight this detail by installing LED light strips or placing sconces and lamps in key areas in order to control the way in which the light and shadows interact with the white brick wall. You can see that exemplified in this bedroom by Studio NL Architecture and Design.
Brick walls, whether painted or not, have this natural ability of making spaces look and feel welcoming and cozy. This results in some very efficient interior design strategies which come in handy when dealing with a variety of spaces such as dining rooms and kitchens. White brick walls are the perfect tool for making a monochromatic or neutral-colored space look inviting. A great example which supports this idea is this apartment designed by O.M.Shumelda. It’s all just a black and white space which gives it a timeless and elegant look.
A white brick wall can look excellent in a kitchen where creating a warm and cozy vibe is usually challenging. This can even be the backsplash. A few slender open shelves installed on the wall would complement the look nicely without covering up the wall.
White brick walls are super versatile and one of the reasons is the fact that they have an irregular surface which gives them a unique and distinguishable texture that makes color unnecessary, hence the perfect pairing with matte white paint. This cozy living room designed by Whiting Architects proves our point perfectly.
White brick walls are an ideal choice for breezy beach houses and coastal homes. They make spaces look and feel super inviting and they also maintain a bright and airy look which is key in these cases. There’s something very soothing about a white brick wall, something that makes it perfect for areas such as the bedroom where texture usually plays an important role. Hang some string lights and display some artwork on the walls and enjoy the calm and breezy atmosphere.
If you like the idea of a white brick wall but you don’t want to let it define your interior design, consider a white brick fireplace surround. It would look charming and timeless and it will stand out in a subtle manner. Also, this lets you keep the walls neutral for a minimalist, contemporary look. This living room interior by Laura Roberts Design is a good source of inspiration.
Not all brick walls have that irregular, worn look reminiscent of old rustic houses. The clean and modern version of that looks a bit similar to subway tiles and has a similar effect of a space. This is the interior of a residence designed by studio EHDO.
As you can see, a white brick wall has lots of potential and one of the scenarios we’d like to put an emphasis in is featured in the design created by MODO Architecture for a house located in Melbourne. In this scenario a floating staircase has this very chic white brick wall backdrop which looks simply gorgeous.
Surprisingly, white brick walls and kitchens make a great combo. This is especially helpful in the case of open space kitchens where an accent wall can help set apart an area, giving it identity and character. We find this design from The Kitchen Source to be a very good example in this case.
Brick fireplaces are pretty common and while they may not look very modern at first, a quick makeover can change everything. Apply a few coats of white paint and cover up the bricks and the fireplace will look brand new and amazing. This is a great way to refresh an old fireplace surround without breaking the budget and without making any sort of structural changes.
