We’re constantly surrounded by colors and we’ve grown very accustomed to it to the point that we’re very hard to impress. That has all sorts of implications that we’re not even aware of. For example, it makes it quite difficult to pick a color scheme for the living room when redecorating. It’s not exactly a matter of choosing a color and going with it but rather having to find an array of colors and nuances that go well together and create the type of decor and ambiance that you’re seeking.
A few touches of gold can really spice things up. You can mix them with some blue and a few neutrals for a sleek and contemporary look. It would be nice to keep the living rooms walls completely white so the accent colors can pop up more.
If your living has any distinctive architectural features such as an exposed brick wall for example you should definitely take advantage of that. Complement the earthy colors with a few cool tones such as blue and green for a balanced look.
Simplicity is quite complex when you think about it. If you want to make your living room simple you wouldn’t just add fewer features to it. A good strategy would be to opt for a neutral color palette which includes natural colors and materials.
When choosing to decorate a living room with both light and dark color tones it can be nice to create a smooth transition between these colors. For example, you can have a black sofa on a light brown area rug, with light blue walls and a white ceiling. All these colors can then be reiterated throughout the room in smaller doses.
It can also be nice to decorate the living room using warm, neutral tones such as white, beige, gold and brown and to complement it all with a single focal point that uses contrasting cool tones. It can be a piece of art, a furniture item, an area rug or a lighting fixture.
If you prefer an eclectic design approach then consider playing with various different colors and mixing in several patterns and textures to create a layered look.
Similarly, you can keep the living room color palette simple and reduced to neutrals but use various different types of materials, finishes, textures and patterns to create well-defined areas with lots of personality.
Black and dark colors in general are considered harsh and they’re not typically used in living rooms. However, they can have positive effects on the decor such as making the space feel very cozy and also being very practical. A nice strategy is to complement all those dark tones with a few light and warm accents. How about a coral accent chair for example?
The color palette of a living room is also closely linked to the design style chosen for the space and the house in general. A more traditional approach would usually make use of colors such as brown mixed with beige which don’t really stand out but look elegant and create a formal decor.
There are lots of different ways of adding accent colors to a living room. One of the most common options is to take advantage of the decorations such as vases, planters, artwork and such.
Black is a very practical color in a lot of different ways. In addition to being timeless and able to look beautiful in combination with pretty much any other color, it can be used to create a dark backdrop for the TV wall which makes it pleasant for the eyes.
Natural colors such as brown or green are great if you want to give your living room an organic look and to create a nature-inspired interior decor. This is also a perfect opportunity to use solid wood in your design.
It’s not the colors themselves that have an impact on how a living room looks and feeling but also the way in which they interact with the textures and finishes used throughout and with the lighting.
Colors that are very bright and vibrant can be tiresome for the eye and thus make a living room feel less comfortable and welcoming. In comparison, soft and subdued nuances are ideal for creating a cozy environment.
Add metallic accents to your living room color palette and use glossy finishes to create a glamorous decor. Gold and black make a nice combo in this sense.
Another idea can be to use different nuances of the same color or use it in combination with different types of materials and finishes to add diversity to the design while maintaining a very simple color palette.
White is a very versatile color. It’s not very practical as white surfaces show every little stain and require special care but it can look exquisite in a living room. Use it to create a pure, contemporary design with Nordic influences.
You can still make your living room look quirky even if it’s mainly decorated with shades of beige and brown which, let’s face it, are pretty boring. You can do that by adding patterns and introducing one or two accent colors in the form of throw pillows, artwork and decorations in general.
If you opt for a colored sofa (colored meaning in a nuance that’s not very common) then try to keep the rest of the decor neutral and simple to avoid making it too busy and tiresome for the eyes.
Decorating the living room in black and white is always a good idea. This is a timeless combination which you can adapt to every style. However, to avoid creating a decor that’s too simple and mainstream, add one or two accent colors.
It can also be interesting use colors that are very common at their core but in slightly unconventional nuances. For example, a shade of brown that’s not what you typically see in every living room you visit.
Certain color schemes can be used to create a theme. For example, you can use brown and green nuances to create a forest-inspired living room decor.
