There’s a lot to think about when planning the interior design of a living room, a lot more than just what type of TV wall mount you should get. It’s a pretty complex process even if you have a small living room which doesn’t really give much freedom in terms of layouts and other such things. We actually have a few tips and ideas that we’d like to share with you in this sense.
Before anything else, you should make a plan. Go ahead and measure the living room so you get a better idea of what could fit where and so on. You can then think about where you want to place your furniture and how it should be organized.
Decide what the main focal points of the living room should be. Do you want the emphasis to be on the TV? If so you need to place and orient the furniture accordingly.
Create purposeful zones in your living room. For those cozy evenings when you want to cuddle on the sofa and watch TV, you can have a comfy setup. However, you might also want to include a reading nook, maybe a little work area too.
The style of the living room is important and is also something that should be decided early on. This can be dictated by the type of building you live in or your own personal preferences.
Pick a color scheme for your living room. Light colors are nice if the room is small and you want to make it seem bright and airy. Darker colors are better suited for a cozy and intimate decor.
The lighting is also very important. You want the living room to be bright but also warm and cozy. That’s why accent lighting is such a big part of the decor.
Make your design stand out but don’t let it become overwhelming or too busy. The colors, materials, finishes and textures should be well balanced. Also, take a step back and look at the big picture every once in a while.
Area rugs are really nice because they make the living room look and feel warm, cozy and welcoming. They add texture to the decor and they’re also a good source of color and pattern.
Another thing to take into consideration when designing the living room is storage. There are a lot of different storage solutions to choose from. We prefer a combination of open and closed modules.
Your living room storage solutions should be oriented towards your specific needs. For example, if you have a large collection of books you’ll need plenty of open shelves.
An interesting design strategy is to let the walls stand out. That’s a nice idea if your living room has exposed brick walls or if you decide to create eye-catching walls using specific paint colors or wallpaper patterns.
Don’t cover up your accent walls but don’t leave them completely empty either. Floating shelves are a nice idea. You can add LED light strips to the underside of the shelves for an even more eye-catching look.
Play around with different types of light fixtures. You could have hanging pendant lamps, floor lamps, table lamps and even some LED strips attached to some shelves or to the back of the furniture.
You should also focus on textures and work with different layers to create a harmonious decor. Area rugs, curtains and upholstered furniture add lots of character to a space.
Many people are afraid of using dark in their home decor, especially when it comes to walls, for fear of making the spaces too dark and gloomy. However, that’s usually unjustified. Black is a very elegant color and you can use it in lots of stylish ways.
A cool trick is to use mirrors to make a space seem bigger and brighter. You could keep that in mind if your living room seems tiny. Mirrors are very similar to artwork when in comes to interior design.
Add personality to your living room with accessories. Accent tables, area rugs, artwork, window treatments and pillows are just a few examples. Let your own space inspire you.
There are plenty of ways to add lots of storage to a living room without making it look small and cramped. A nice trick is to match the color of the furniture to that of the wall behind it.
Welcome nature into your living room. Being in some plants to create a fresh and vibrant decor. We’re big fans of oversized planters and vertical indoor gardens. Hanging planters are also great, especially if you want to save some floor space.
You can also play with different geometric shapes and different patterns to create a cool and interesting living room decor. This could be a nice strategy if you want to keep the color palette simple and neutral.
