Whether you have bought a new bed in black or have an ebony bedstead already in your home, designing a bedroom with one presents certain challenges that other colors simply don’t give you. A darker bed will draw the eye and can create a very dynamic look, with high contrast, in certain décors.

In other room designs a black bed can be very much in keeping, but these rooms need a lighter touch here and there to stop the image becoming too dark. There’s nothing wrong with pitch dark tones in a bedroom’s design, particularly when it comes to the bed itself, but you ought to bear in mind certain design principles for the best results.

Wooden Bedsteads.

Dark wood bedsteads have a place in many homes, so don’t be put off purchasing one for a guest room or even the master bedroom. A typical décor to go for with a black wood bed is white with another primary color, such as red.Use red and white linen and a matching wall treatment, so that the black of the bed is not overpowering.

If you have brown wood flooring, go for white and brown linen with the same color scheme for your drapes. In rooms with other items of furniture in black wood, such as a wardrobe, keep the walls light and airy such as sky blue.

Setting out a bedroom around a black bed should not be a mystery. Although some designers will tell you it is a black art, often the room’s look will come together with some carefully chosen images.

Black and white photography hung over the bed will work well, especially if the frame is largely black. Abstract images made with slate on off white will also help to bring the room together, visually speaking. Where you have a black bed with white, or off white linen, go for some pictures which are mostly white with a neat black border or trim to create a coherent look.

Considered Color Schemes.

Whitewashed walls are great in a room with a charcoal bed. However, you can be in danger of being a bit predictable if you only accessorise with black items, like bedside lamps on white chests of drawers. Introduce a third color, such as olive green, to give the room a list and a more original look.

Four Poster Beds.

Black beds make something of a statement in a way that other colors don’t. So, why not go the whole nine yards and opt for a back four poster? A black bed with a coordinating headboard and linen can create a sumptuous look that is hard to beat. Twin four posters, on the other hand, can help create a traditional look in a white guest room. Remember that the uprights of a four poster should create a dynamic tone contrast against the walls of the room, no matter what your color scheme is.

Coordinating Wallpaper.

Choose the right wallpaper for a bedroom with a black bed. Black and white tessellating designs are an obvious choice that will work well. However, also consider high contrast floral designs for your bedroom, too. Try to choose a wallpaper that creates a distinct look from that of the bed’s headboard for additional contrast.
