How To Build A Storage Shed From Scratch

A storage shed is a useful annex, being perfect for keeping tools, winter equipments and other similar items and thus freeing up valuable space inside the house. But getting a contractor to design and build you a shed or finding one on the market are both costly options. A much cheaper idea would be to build the shed yourself and you might be surprised to find out that it’s not that difficult. All you have to do is follow a series of steps.

Pick a type

Depending on the nature of the items you plan on storing in there, there are various different types of sheds you can choose from. So take the time to determine what type suits you best by making a list. This will also help you determine how big the shed would have to be and whether or not it needs to be insulated in case you want to store items that are affected by dampness or by extreme temperatures.

Make a plan

Then, once you’ve decided on a particular type of shed, it’s type to make a sketch or blueprint. This step is important because it allows you to be certain your shed will be strong and durable. You should also check the local building regulations and make sure everything is in order before starting the project. You should spend some time doing research on the subject so you can better estimate the necessary teps, resources and everything else.

Choose the right materials

This part of the project is related to a variety of things. It has to do with the type of design you’ve chosen but also with your personal preferences. If you want a solid construction you can opt for bricks but if you want the project to be quick then wood would be a better option.

However, there’s one part of the shed where you don’t want to make compromises and that’s the roof. You don’t want leaks or dirt inside your storage shed, regardless of what you plan on keeping in there.

There’s also the cost to take into consideration. For example, if you want this to be a cheap project, consider using wooden pallets. They’re extremely versatile and you can even get them for free.

A good foundation

Every project starts with a foundation. In the case of a shed, the foundation should be sufficiently deep underground to support the weight of the structure you’ll be building on top and to keep it safe and secure at all times.

Also, when building a shed with a concrete floor, this one should be around 4” thick and it can also have an extra layer of steel mesh for added strength and durability.

It’s extremely important to measure things properly. Accurate measurements simplify your work a lot and also help you pick the right fittings and accessories.

If you want your storage shed to blend well into your garden or backyard, you can also build it with a small deck. It would look like a miniature house and you can decorate the window sills with flower boxes.

Pick a style and a design that match the main house. So, for example, if you live in a Victorian home with a traditional design, look there for inspiration for your lovely storage shed.

You can also build a covered deck or a pergola for your shed. It can be a shady spot where you can rest while working in the garden. If you want, you can make turn this portion into an outdoor shower.

The corrugated metal used here gives the storage shed an intriguing look. Another interesting detail is the angle feature which is a modern interpretation of a bay window adapted to the size of the structure.

A small front porch can make all the difference in the case of a project like this. It elevated the shed from being a simple storage space to the statute of chic annex and relaxing pavilion.

If you plan to use the shed as a greenhouse or if you simply want it to be well illuminated, build it with large windows. Sure, this won’t keep the interior very cool during the summer but it has its advantages.

Use organic colors to make the shed blend in and look natural. For example, this one has a wooden exterior the same color as the walkway stones and a green trim around the door, windows and roof.

Design and organize the interior of the shed however you think it’s more practical for you. For example, add a workbench if you think you need one or focus on storage if that’s the priority.

It’s up to you to customize the shed’s interior however you want. This has to do with your own preferences as well as with the function you want to give to this space. If you like gardening, then design the shed as such.
