Call it chaise lounge, lounge chair or however else you like. Either way, you have to admit these things are very comfortable and perfect for decks, terrace, poolside areas and for the outdoors in general. In addition, there’s really no need to spend a lot of money on one if you can make it yourself. Sure, it won’t look as fancy as some you find in stores but they can be just as functional and comfortable.
A great tutorial for building a chaise lounge is offered on shanty-2-chic. As you can see, it was built out of wood so the boards are the main thing you need to focus on. You’ll also need some wood glue, a drill, narrow utility hinges for the back and a few other miscellaneous things. The project is pretty simple and quite cheap as well. There are ways to customize the design using paint or wood stain.
If you prefer a more solid design, have a look at the project described on madmini. The outdoor loungers featured here were built using wood boards, heavy strap hinges, screws, sandpaper, sealer and cushions and the estimated cost for each one was around $80. The frame looks like a big box. The tricky part is adding the hinges and making the reclining backrest. But once that is in place as well you can just put the cushion on and relax.
As you can see, building an outdoor chaise lounge is not as difficult and complicated as you might think. There are many different designs to choose from. The one featured on ana-white was meant to be affordable and simple. It was made using wood boards, bolts, nuts, washers, screws and glue. Cutting the boards and pre-drilling the holes is the first step. Then assembly begins. When that part is complete as well, you can focus on the customization of the chaise lounge.
A simple and modern design idea is also offered on buildsomething. This one is a little bit different from the others. It has a sleek and sinuous shape that gives it a sculptural look. After you cut the leg and back rails you also need to make the seat rails. Then assemble the sides , attach the braces, then focus on the other side. After that, sand and stain your new creation.
On the other hand, the design featured on hometalkis really unusual. This thing actually used to be a claw-foot tub obviously, the project is challenging. The tub has to be cut and then the edges have to be made smooth. However, once that is done, all you have to do is paint the tub or what’s left of it, add a mattress and some cushions and relax. Obviously, this is not a project for everyone but if you’re brave enough and if you have a beautiful claw-foot tub you no longer need, you might as well give it a try. Who knows, it might actually work.
