A long and narrow living room can pose serious challenges in the decorating department. Finding the right balance between comfort and style is not easy when dealing with such a difficult layout. But there are many ways in which you can use such a space efficiently.

First of all, decide what the focal point of the room will be. It should be on the longest wall of the room. So let’s say you want the entertainment center to be the main attraction. Then it should go on the longest wall that doesn’t have windows on it and the sofa and armchairs should rest against the opposite wall.

You should divide the room into two or more areas. For example, you can have a sitting area and a cozy reading corner or a workstation. The main sitting area should be organized around the focal point of the room.

You can divide these spaces with different area rugs. Use one rug to define one space. Avoid using long runner and opt instead for round or rectangular rugs or for a less common shape like a hexagon or a semi circle.

Make sure you don’t obstruct the traffic areas. Everyone should be able to get in and out of the room without disturbing anyone else. Also, avoid creating asymmetrical designs as they can make the room seem crowded and overly complicated.
