When there’s not enough space on the floor for everything we own, we start to look up and to devise new storage options. Hanging storage is one of them. It’s a solution for only for cluttered or small spaces but also for decors that could use some diversity in this sense or that would be enhanced by elements such as a hanging planter or a practical storage system for shoes and accessories. We’ll cover these ideas and several similar ones withthe following examples.
Let’s start with this storage and display system for shoes that we found on Burkatron. It’s a grid made of wire mesh and it’s something anyone can create with very little effort. Basically you just have to figure out the shape and size you want for your shoe storage grid and then to cut the wire mesh accordingly. It’s a great DIY project that can turn out to be just what your walk-in closer or entryway needs.
A hanging planter can be a practical storage solution but also a suitable decor idea for just about any type of space. There are plenty of designs to choose from and this DIY macrame plant shelf is one of them. The project requires very few things: some twine, a square pot, a piece of plywood and a jigsaw and a drill. If you want, you can also sand down the shelf and then stain or paint it.
For all those accessories like hats, sunglasses, scarves and bags you need a practical storage system and it just happens that we have a great idea: a brass unit that’s incredibly versatile and easy to craft and install. All you need is a metal rail, strong string and some hangers and hooks. You can customize this thing in any way you want. Imagine this on your entryway wall or even in your bedroom or dressing room.
For things like blankets or even clothes and accessories, a basket could surely be practical. But having it sit on the floor may not be the best option in some cases so what if you hang it on a wall or on the back of a door? That could definitely work. Where do you get one? Well, it’s simple actually: you craft it yourself. It’s a simple crochet project which you can find out more about on Ravelry.
We also came across this original and unique wall-mounted storage system made of used bicycle parts mounted on wooden plates. They resemble antler trophies and they’re both aesthetically pleasing and very practical. You can basically use them to hang anything from your bike to hats, clothes, bags, umbrellas and pretty much anything else. The idea is not only interesting but also very versatile. {found on glandis}.
Pegboards are also really practical and great for organization. You can usually adapt them for any room and task you have in mind. For instance, if you want a kitchen pegboard, you can use it to hang and organize your utensils, spice containers and even some planters with herbs. Just look around and see what could work this way.{found on Elizabeth Joandesigns}.
Another option for the kitchen can also be a wire utensil rack like the one featured on Abeautifulmess. It’s made of wire mesh and it’s really easy to put together. All you need is some wire mesh rebar, ceiling hooks and S hooks. You can also prime and paint the organizer if you want or, if this mounting system doesn’t work for you, you can come up with a different idea.
For things like your mail, documents and general office supplies, you could use a hanging wall pocket. It’s something that you can design and craft yourself. You can find instructions for this on Design-Milk. Here’s what you’ll need: leather patches, a grommet kit, fusible bonding web, an iron, leather glue, canvas and a craft knife.
Hanging shelves are probably the most versatile and customizable home accessories, with so many possible variations and styles to choose from. For instance, you can build some shelves using wooden dowels. It’s what the tutorial on Design-Milk is all about. The supplies required for this project include six regular dowels, a square dowel, a drill, some C clamps, wood glue, some string or twine, double-sided tape and hanging hardware.
You’ve probably seen all sorts of bookshelves, each with its own charm and character. They’re usually great because they let you organize and display books in a practical and aesthetically-pleasing manner. Most of the time, the books sit on the shelf. But that’s not the case with this custom bookshelf that we found on Etsy. This you lets you hang the books.
A very practical way to store and organize things is to put them in boxes. If you want to also take these off the floor, then you can have some wall-mounted boxes like the ones on Tableandhearth. For this particular project, you need wooden crates, rope, a saw, a drill, sandpaper, paint and sealer. Follow the instructions and you’ll be able to make yourself some quirky hangingrope shelves.
Everyone knows that jars are extremely versatile and basically meant to be repurposed. You can turn them into all sorts of things but their most common use is as storage containers. Speaking of this, we came across a practical idea while browsing Thinkcrafts. Instead of displaying the repurposed jars on shelves, desks or tables, you could hang them to save space.
These cute little buckets are a lot like jars. You can them as organizers for the office. Put your pens in one bucket, your scissors in another and keep your desk clutter-free and empty so you can be more productive and focused on the actual task. You can make your own bucket organizer and you can have as many containers as you want. You can even customize them with labels, paint or other things. {found on thebeautydojo}.
Another useful accessory for the office could also be a hanging organizer. If you want to craft your own, there’s a tutorial you can use on Burkatron. Here are the supplies needed for it: a plywood sheet, some balsa wood, a cork sheet, wood glue, a craft knife and a plain page notebook. This might actually help you with your office organization so you can stay on top of things.
Here’s a great combo: jars and shelves. Curious how this works? Check out the project on Hildablue. It’s actually pretty simple. If you want to build your own version, you’ll need a wooden shelf, mason jars with metal lids, paint and screws. The idea is to screw the jar lids to the underside of the shelf which should be mounted on the wall.
These cute little storage bins featured on Makeit-loveit can be used in a lot of fun and practical ways. For instance, you can put your phone in one and hang it while it’s charging or you can use several of these to organize your office supplies or the little items you need for your crafting projects. What’s lovely about them is that they can be decorated and customized in tons of different ways. They’re also easy to make out of recycled containers.
With all these interesting hanging storage ideas, we almost forgot about the good old coat rack. We remembered just in time to show you an inspiring project that we found on Funkyjunkinteriors. It’s a coat rack which you can easily craft yourself out of a board or a piece of driftwood and some pipe fittings.
Where do you usually keep your magazines? They’re probably just scattered on a table or hidden somewhere. But there’s a more stylish and more practical way to store them and it’s described in detail on Monsterscircus. If you want to create something similar, find yourself some wooden dowels, some beautiful knobs, leather cord and the tools you’ll need which include a metal cutting saw or dremel, a drill and scissors.
A simple tree branch is the main element needed to create a jewelry display system just like the one featured on Forthemakers. In addition to that, you’ll need some small hooks. In case you also want to decorate the branch, you could use paint and tape or colored embroidery floss. Hang the branch with fishing line. You might also need a drill to make holes in both ends of the branch.
