If you ever want to start building your own furniture pieces, consider this: few things are easier to work with than tree trunks/ wood logs. In most cases, all you have to do bring the log home and find a good place for it. It could become your new side table or nightstand. Of course, if you want, there are ways to customize the log and add new features to it. However, at the end of the day, it will still be one of the simplest projects you could ever do.
The hardest thing with such a project is often finding a log that looks great and has the right proportions for the project you have in mind. So basically once you’ve selected your log, bring it home and check to see if it has any bugs and unwanted inhabitants. If everything checks out, take inside the house and turn it into a coffee table. If you want to be able to easily move it around the house, put on some caster wheels. {found on mavisdavis}.
If you want you can get rid of all the bark that covers the log. You’ll need to remove it all and then sand the log and clean it. You could also stain or paint it but that would take away the wood’s natural beauty and texture. There’s no need for casters if you don’t plan to move the table around much.
Each tree is unique and, as a result, each wood stump is unique as well. So take your time to find the perfect one. Usually, the more imperfect and irregular the shape of the trunk is, the more beautiful and eye-catching the side table will become. So look for knots and interesting shapes.
Depending on the size and shape of the tree trump, you can find various uses for it. For example, a larger one can become a very nice coffee table. Any cracks and holes will just make the table more unique and interesting. You can choose to leave the bark on or remove it for a cleaner look.
Coffee tables such as this one can be a lot more practical and functional if they’re mobile and can be moved around. Given the dimensions, a solid log table will be quite heavy so adding caster wheels to it could be a very good idea. Keep in mind that you’ll probably have to seal the wood to make it stain-resistant.
There are plenty of wood types to choose from so keep that in mind. Pick a type that suits the style and décor of the room you want to place it in. For example, one with a natural light color can be a wonderful addition to a Nordic interior design or a contemporary and minimalist one.
There’s always the option to use more than one tree stump. You could create a collection of small individual log tables which can either be used individually or as a set. They can have different dimensions and heights and can even be made from different types of wood.
Another very interesting idea is to make a coffee table made of several wood slices, casually stacked one on top of the other. You can control the height of the table this way, not to mention that it will look pretty interesting and eye-catching, which is a big plus in most cases.
There’s more than one way to use a log if you want it to become a coffee table. Instead of placing it vertically which would result in a small table, you can choose a horizontal position. You’d have to cut the top and bottom portions to make them flat. This can prove to be challenging but definitely not very difficult or impossible.
Here’s another example of a coffee table made from a log. It appears to be hollow at the center, a detail which makes it stand out and gives it character. Basically, using this strategy, you can make the table as long as you want.
