Coasters allow you to keep both hot and cold beverages within arms’ reach without damaging your tables. But do they always have the be so boring? Well, no. There are a number of easy ways to upgrade your plain coasters and make them a little bit more interesting. Stripes are a classic pattern you can bring into your home decor in a number of ways. Here’s a great way to add some color and stripes to your coasters.
round cork coasters (or cork board, round stencil, and exacto knife)painter’s tapepaintbrushat least 2 colors of acrylic paint
You’ll need to start this project by prepping your coasters. If you have pre-made round coasters, this is very easy. Simply wipe them down with a damp cloth to make sure they are clean. If you just have plain cork, you can use a large canister or similar object as a guide and cut your own coasters with an exacto knife.
Then you’ll need to apply some painter’s tape around the middle of each of your coasters. The section that is not covered will make up the painted section, so make sure that theproportionsare what you are looking for. The coasters pictured leave about 1/3 of the surface unpainted. When your tape is in the correct spot, make sure that the entire length is secure so that no paint can seep through.
Once the tape is secure, it’s time to apply your paint. The first layer will be the thin stripe, so select the color or colors that you want to use as sort of secondary colors. Apply a coat or two until you reach your desired color and texture. A sponge brush actually works best for application on this surface.
Allow the paint to dry. Then you’ll need to remove the tape and apply another strip of tape lower on the coaster. The tape should cover some of the already painted section. The more of the painted section you cover, the bigger your stripe will be. Once the tape is in place, apply another coat of paint in a second color. You can even repeat this process again if you want to add more stripes and colors.
Finally, allow the paint to dry and then remove the tape, Make any last-minute touch ups if necessary and enjoy your new colorful coasters!
