Instructions step by step to craft these Halloween plant holders:

Step 1: Use the mold

Since this is plant holder, you will have to make a small indent in the top of the pumpkin in order to hold the plant. The mold I used was such that the head was at the bottom so I had to jerry-rig some sculpey into a small cone to be placed at the bottom of the mold.

To do this, take your Sculpey and roll out a small piece into a log about 2 inches long. Then starting at the corner roll it into a cone shape. Make as many of these as you want to have pumpkin air plant holders. Follow the instructions on your Sculpey to bake it (I believe it’s about 275℉ for 15 minutes per ¼ inch thickness (mine took about 20-25 minutes for reference)).

Step 2: Making the plaster

Once your sculpey cone is done and cooled you can mix together the plaster and water. You want to follow the instructions on your packaging to make the plaster. Ours was that you add 2 parts plaster to 1 part water. Be sure to mix it in a container that can get ruined! Since the mold is fairly small you won’t need too much but it’s better to make extra than have too little plaster. The plaster shouldn’t be too runny. Mix it together thoroughly so there aren’t any clumps of dry plaster left.

Step 3: silicone mold

Once the plaster is mixed, you should work fairly quickly. Get your sculpey cone and hold it in the bottom of your silicone mold with the tip facing into the mold.

This is when a helping hand would be nice because you will have to pour your plaster into the mold while holding the sculpey cone flush against the bottom of the mold. I held the sculpey cone with my finger and then spooned the plaster around it into the mold. You will have to gently hit the mold against the surface you are working on to get out any air bubbles and to make sure the plaster gets to the bottom of the mold. Once the mold is full, scrape off any excess plaster and let dry for 1 hour (or according to your package instructions).

Step 4: Let it dry

After an hour, you can take your pumpkin out of the mold. My plaster instructions said to let dry a full 24 hours before you paint it, but I didn’t see a difference when I didn’t wait 24 hours. Don’t worry about any imperfections or air bubbles that might have showed up – just makes the pumpkins more realistic looking!

There are a bunch of different jack-o-lantern faces that you can choose for your pumpkins – or you could even mix and match and get a few different molds. I loved the big toothy grin of this pumpkin, but it’s totally up to you!
