Today I want to share a tutorial with you for using porcelain paint to make this Kate Spade inspired DIY Gold Stripe Vase. Spring is my favourite time of the year and it’s peony season, so I needed an excuse to DIY something to display some pretty blooms in my studio!
In our neighborhood we have a recycling shelf where people can leave items they no longer need for others to take. When I found this sweet blush pink vase, I knew it would be perfect to transform into a metallic vase project.

Begin by cleaning the surface of the vase with some hot soapy water or rubbing alcohol. Tape off the areas you want to leave unpainted. You can use painters tape, but I chose washi as it was a better depth for the stripes I wanted to create.
I focused my design just on the front of the vase, but you could tape all the way around if you prefer. Give the paint pot a little shake to ensure it is mixed and get your paintbrush ready!
The amount of coats required will depend on the surface you are painting. My vase was almost matt in texture, so it needed a few coats to build up a good coverage.
Allow the paint to dry in between coats. I did 3 coats but it is up to you how much you would like to build up the colour.
Once the coats are touch dry, carefully peel the tape off to reveal your stripe pattern. I touched up any small areas of pain outside the stripe pattern with a cotton bud.
In order to set the paint onto the vase, you will need to bake it in the oven according to the instructions on the paint bottle. My vase needed 35 minutes in the oven.
I also chose a paint that is food safe and allows items to be placed in the dishwasher once decorated, so this tutorial can be used to create painted crockery items too.
Add your flowers and your vase is ready to be displayed!
If you wanted to try alternativepatterns, it is as simple as arranging the tape differently. I think a geometric vase would work well and I’m hoping to try some polka dot mugs soon.
I hope you enjoyed this simple DIY today and don’t forget to share your creations with us if you try out any of these tutorials!
