It’s the little things that often make life better and small and simple DIY projects and crafts actually offer a lot of satisfaction. Today we’ll show you how you can very easily make pretty decorations out of buttons and magnetic tape which you can use to add a bit of charm and style to your home.

DIY Button Magnets

You can have these cute magnets displayed on the fridge or use them as decorations for tin can planters, pencil holders and other things made of metal. What’s great about this project is that it doesn’t tape up a lot of time and only requires a few simple and inexpensive resources to make.

How to craft the button magnets:

Step 1: Gather your supplies

This tutorial shows you how to make three beautiful button magnets and each one requires 3 different buttons so you’ll need 9 of them in total. Of course, if you want to make more of these decorations you’ll need more supplies so plan accordingly.

Step 2: Stack 3 buttons on top of each other and glue them together

You should prepare a few magnets in three different sizes and get enough of each kind so you can have them grouped in sets of three: a big one, a medium-sized one and a small one. You should be able to glue the medium button on top of the large one, nicely centered. Use a small dab of hot glue for this. Then take the small button can glue it on top of the medium button.

Step 3: Glue a little flower ornament on top of the small button

The little flower decorations are meant to be added on top of the small buttons to hide the little holes in the center and to make the design just a bit more pretty and cute. You might be able to find self-adhesive decorations but if not you can always just use a hot glue gun.

Step 4: Measure and cut a piece of magnetic tape for the back of the large button

At this point the actual button decoration is done except you won’t be able to stick on the fridge or other metallic surfaces just yet. In order to do that you’ll need to measure and cut a piece of magnetic tape big enough to fit on the back side of the large button.

Step 5: Glue the tape onto the back of the button

Use hot glue to attach it just to make sure it won’t peel off. The adhesive that it comes with will most like not be strong enough plus the tape won’t sit perfectly flat on the button. The glue will solve all these issues.

Step 6: Add 2 more bits of tape to make a plus sign on the back

To ensure that the button ornament sticks nicely onto the metallic surface no matter how you center it, you should cut two more smaller bits of magnetic tape that you can place to the left and right side of the already existing piece of tape. Aim to make a plus sign on the back of the button and to create a larger area that the metal can adhere to.

Glue these two extra pieces of tape onto the button just like you did with the other one. Make sure they’re not too big and don’t stand out when you look at your button decoration from the front. Trim them a bit if necessary.

Now that you know how it’s all done you can continue to make more of these beautiful button magnets. Take three more buttons, this time in a different color combination perhaps, glue them together and add a little flower ornament on top. Add the tape on the back just like you did before.

Step 8: Try different color combinations and pair 3 more buttons together

Since this is a set of three button magnets, you have one more to go. Play around with other combinations of colors and different types of buttons and glue 3 more together, with a little flower ornament on top just as before. Add the tape and that’s it, you have three lovely magnets that you can use as decorations however you want.
