The great thing about decorating for the holidays is that, although there are definitely traditional tendencies, the décor we use for our own homes can be molded and modified and shaped and swapped out for just those things that will make Christmas more meaningful for us and our families. No matter what your style, here are some inspiringly chic ways to incorporate holiday decor into your true style…and not the other way around.

Kid-Friendly Christmas.

It doesn’t take much to transform an everyday space into something Christmasy-magical. How about some pine boughs or garland greenery on the staircase railing, bespotted with some charming yarn ball ornaments? It’s festive, it’s fun, and it is kid-friendly chic without being either too juvenile or delicate. And red Hunter galoshes would make every day a holiday.

Colorful Christmas.

Just because the traditional season’s colors are red and green doesn’t mean that all Christmas décor has to be color-themed like that. If you love color – all colors – then let them flow into your holiday decoration as well! An ombre rainbow tree and some fantastically bright thematic art for the mantel is a fun and refreshing way to decorate for the season.

Contemporary Christmas.

Taking a bold step away from the natural Christmas, contemporary styled holidays will tend to look more monochromatic and understated. Black and white décor, focused more on the interesting shapes of the season than the items themselves, is a sure-fire win. Minimalist Christmas.

Just because you don’t like to go over-the-top with your decorating doesn’t mean your holiday home will be Grinchy! A whitewashed or painted branch with some cheerful ornaments might be just the thing that welcomes the holidays into your whole space.

French Country Christmas.

Lots of natural, earthy décor – like that fantastic grapevine swag – are key elements for French country styled holiday décor. Pops of red and silver add the necessary sparkle and shine, but they’re kept out of the limelight. I love the chic droopiness of the greenery here; it seems less formal and more original and inviting than the average pine bough mantel.

Homemade Christmas.

There’s one (or more) on every block, isn’t there? Someone who singlehandedly transforms their home into Holiday Central using only the skills of their own two hands. The good news is, homemade (or handmade) items can be anything – a fabric-covered wall letter, some paper garland, or a few cleverly decorated wood blocks. The sky is the limit with this endearing and utterly personable Christmas style.

Swedish Christmas.

If you like to keep things simple and love Scandinavian style, with lots of light wood tones and traditional red-and-white décor, I’m sure you’ll love decorating for the holidays this year. A large wrapped “present” on the wall provides a powerful graphic without overtaking the space, while a small yet detailed red wooden tabletop tree carries the holidays home.

Eclectic Christmas.
