Context is always important when it comes to houses. This family home from Bangkok, Thailand is a prime example. This is a project completed in 2020 by HAA Studio and replaced an old house which has been demolished. Some of the materials from the old structure were preserved with the explicit purpose of being integrated into the new design as nostalgic decorative details.
The house has a modern and simple overall aesthetic both inside and outThe swimming pool is positioned at the center of the house and surrounded by interior spaces
The plot is surrounded by two-story houses on 3 sides, with the street bordering it on the 4th side and this meant a unique design approach was needed in order to offer inhabitants lots of privacy but also creating outdoor spaces that suit their lifestyle. Creating a custom home that molds around the personalities and lifestyle of those using it was the main goal.
The large windows and glazed surfaces give the indoor areas a very open and airy feelThe two floors are connected via a white staircase with black vertical railingsThe main indoor areas have a direct view of the central pool area
The owners enjoy swimming and sunbathing and this inspired the architects to center the house around a courtyard with a swimming pool and a large pool deck with sunbeds. This area is surrounded by buildings on all sides which gives it a private and cozy feel but is also open to the sky which creates a feeling of freedom and openness.
The main entrance is camouflaged into the side of the houseSmall pockets of greenery complement the pool and terrace area
Given this courtyard-centric design, the house is organized into different sections on top of having two floors. The first floor is adjacent to the pool and includes the main entrance as well as the master bedroom among other areas. The kitchen and dining area are also on this level and they feature full-height windows that overlook the pool and the terrace. The second floor is organized into three sections, namely a two-bedroom area, a living room and a roof garden.
The kitchen and dining area are positioned on one side of the pool with sliding glass doors towards itThe kitchen is long and narrow, with angled clerestory windows, a big island and lots of storageThe living room is situated on the second floor and has a very inviting and soothing decorThe high ceiling was ideal for these large [pendant lamps above the kitchen island and the dining tableThis is a multipurpose room which opens onto the roof terraceThe roof terrace has glass railings and a covered sitting area with greeneryThe poolside terrace features a sheltered area for lounging and socializingThe central pool area is linked to all sides of the house, including this elegant bathroom
