Upgrade an old frame with a bright color and wood veneer to turn an outdated piece into a modern new home accessory. Use your DIY frame to display your family photos or frame an interesting fabric or patterned paper to finish off a table top-of-shelf vignette. Nothing’s better than turning something old into something new and lively!

1. Start by spray painting your old frame. Depending on the finish of your frame, you may want to scuff it with sandpaper or a scotch brite pad first (dust off and clean afterwards!) to help the paint stick. Let the paint dry according to the instructions on the back of the bottle.
2. Cut the veneer for the frame covering. Use a straight edge and x-acto knife. Cut your wood slightly larger the the frame size (it will be cut down later in one of the last steps).
3. Cut the edges of the wood veneer (all 4 sides) at a 45 degree angle.
4. Use your painter’s tape to tape off the edges of the frame (after the paint has dried of course!).
5. Spray the face of the frame with spray adhesive.
6. Place your wood pieces on the face of the frame and seal down. Let dry for the time indicated on the back of the bottle.
7. Remove the painter’s tape and use your x-acto knife to trim down the inside and outside excess of wood from the frame face. Use the edge of the frame as your straight edge, cutting slowly and smoothly.
8. Flip your frame over and spray with a few coats of spray adhesive. You can spray the entire frame (front and sides). This will make your wood veneer shiny and make your frame much more durable. Let dry according to the time on the back of the bottle.
Once you’re done, fill your DIY frame project and display it! Hang on the wall or prop up on a dresser or shelf to show off your newest project!
