This home by the sea in Devon breaks all the stereotypes of a house in the English countryside and instead offers up a chic interior style you would never expect. Certainly, there are killer sea views from the back yard, but the real bonuses come inside with plentiful comfort, edgy decor and a sleek gourmet kitchen. It’s the perfect home base for a vacation in the region and you can rent it for your own holiday!
The Devon home encompasses just over 2,300 square feet of living space and has four bedrooms and five bathrooms. The entire house is a modern design dream, with the main attraction being the fireplace in the living room that seems to defy gravity. The exhaust pipe extends down from the ceiling, ending in the fireplace that hovers over the floor in the center of the room. You can be sure this is where everyone will want to gather on a cool evening, after a long day out and about, sightseeing or hiking.
Speaking of the area, the Devon coast is known for its fabulous beaches, which range from long stretches of golden sand to rocky nooks and inlets. If you’re not up for the beach – or the weather isn’t quite operating, there is still much to see and do in the region, with plenty of picturesque thatched villages where you can browse show and have tea and scones, country pubs for an evening out or a leisurely lunch, or even lazy rivers and trails for hiking and relaxing.
Décor throughout is both classy and edgy, with sumptuous velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws. Wall decor is a bit avant-garde with neon and some curious, artistic light fixtures in the bedrooms. Even with all that going on, the home — called the Early Risers House — is serene and tranquil. Floor-to-ceiling windows across the back of the living space show off the gorgeous view of the sea, and to the other direction, the rolling hills of the English countryside. The home as a whole is spread across staggered levels with an open floor plan for plenty of light and ease of movement.
The dining room also faces the sea and is fabulous for meals because it’s so light and bright, just steps down from the very modern kitchen. A quick breakfast or an elaborate dinner is perfect in the space, thanks to all the views.
The sleek kitchen is a design gem, with no visible hardware and a very coordinated and integrated look. The appliances are all built in and secreted away behind panels while drawers and cupboards easily open by the lip of the front piece. It has everything you need for your vacation cooking adventures, including a coffee pod machine.
Another few steps above the kitchen are separate seating area that’s a perfect refuge if you want time away from the rest of the family in the other part of the living space. Settle in with a book or have a chat and listen to some music.
This home boasts plenty of amenities to make your vacation fun and easy, ranging from Wifi, television and a home cinema set-up to a balcony/rooftop terrace, hot tub and a rain shower. There are even luxury toiletries and bedding awaiting your arrival.
The bedrooms are well-equipped with comfortable beds and some very cool nightstand tables that are paired with balloonish pendant lights suspended from the ceiling. Large sliding doors lead out to the patio and the view that spreads out before you is of the green fields beyond. A second bedroom is similar with an equally lovely view.
A third bedroom has an amazing gallery wall above the headboard, and this space also features pendant lights instead of standard bedside lamps, for a fresher, more design-forward look. Overall, it’s a very cool set-up to find in an English home.
Another sleeping space is actually a bunk room that’s perfect for kids or even some extra family members that are vacationing with you. This space also has a lovely view of the surrounding hills.
The master bathroom is a modern, Zen-like space made for unwinding, especially with the large soaking tub as its centerpiece. Melt away any aches from all that traipsing around the countryside in this deep vat of relaxation. There’s a skylight that keeps the space bright during the day and at night, you might spy some stars or even the moon.
In pleasant weather, the back garden is where you’ll be spending your time and maybe even eating some of your meals. Chic, comfortable outdoor seating is a perfect spot for morning coffee or an evening cocktail. The side of the yard includes more seating as well as a table and chairs and hot tub to extend your enjoyment of the outdoors. It’s likely you’ll never tire of gazing at the sea in the distance!
As you might expect, the exterior of the home is also attention-getting for a number of reasons. Not only does it not fit the stereotypical mold of an English country home, but the architectural design makes the most of the sloped landscape in an innovative way, creating a one-of-a-kind interior of staggered levels and lots of open, airy space.
