I sleep with one pillow. One. Not two, not three, and certainly not eight. But, strangely, my bed currently houses five to eight pillows on a daily basis. Why is this? Oh, probably because it’s pretty. And because sometimes we use lots of pillows to prop ourselves up at night when we’re reading or working. But sometimes (usually about the time that I’m, after throwing all the pillows off the bed the night before, trying to arrange them back on the bed in the morning), I wonder if there’s an ideal pillow setup for beds…and if that number is: anything fewer than what I’ve got now.
After doing some research, I don’t think there’s any one number. It all comes down to taste. Here are some ideas of different pillow numbers and arrangements that might strike your fancy:
The bed pillows in this sweet, simple bedroom are perfectly proportioned. Two large neutrally colored shams, two bright fuchsia lumbar pillows, and one neutral printed bolster pillow are neither too few nor too many here. Textures are subtle but meaningful in each set, and the overall combination is simple, colorful, and functional. I especially love how there’s not a lot to toss to aside every night.
Sleek and industrial, this bed is home to two euro shams, two standard shams, one square throw, and one small rectangular throw. Textures of the shams coordinate with the coverlet, which is like a microchasm of the tufted headboard. I like the continuity here, and it’s aesthetically juxtaposed with large floral and geometric prints of different colors.
This bed seems quite masculine in color and form while simultaneously bringing in a feminine vibe with the plush comfort. The bed holds two patterned euro shams, two standard pillows cased in sheet coordinates, and one full-length velvet patterned bolster. Softness seems to be the #1 priority here (as it should be!), what with the deep tufted upholstered headboard down to the thick duvet. Looks very inviting.
If simplicity is your number, you may find this set up resonating with your heart (or closed eyes). Four standard sleeping pillows are stacked, simply and nearly unnoticed, at the head of the bed, while two thick down-filled bed pillows draw attention. These plush shams are simple but still very impactful with a single bold stripe…fitting in perfectly with the contemporary minimalist room.
This fabulous bed is home to three dotted euro shams, two neutral throws, one full patterned bolster, and one small rectangular throw. The fun polka dot print set right up against the dark wood headboard is visually powerful and, in my mind, a fantastic pairing. This bed has a tight color palette, with each set/level of pillows playing an important part in carrying out the scheme. It does seem a lot of pillows come bedtime, but I’m thinking this beautiful arrangement is worth it.
