You can make an old industrial building look super warm and cozy if you put your mind to it and we’ve seen this done successfully time after time. One of our latest finds is this beautiful loft recently renovated by Chicago’s interior design studio Vladimir Radutny Architects. Situated in a century-old industrial building from Chicago, Illinois which was converted into a residence a while ago. However, it was only in 2018 that it finally started to look like a welcoming and comfortable home and not an awkward improvised residence. The designers managed to make the industrial features look less overwhelming by compartmentalizing the space in a way that makes sense and feels natural and by adding warm materials, finishes and colors to the mix.
Part of the reason why this industrial is so welcoming has to do with its exposed brick wallsCustom-built structures and furniture help divide and organize the spaces while also adding warmth to the loftThe concrete ceiling is one of the most industrial features of this loft and has been preserved as such
The feeling of openness and spaciousness specific to industrial structures was preserved and chiseled by creating different spaces and functions that are divided yet look and feel connected. Everything is wrapped in an industrial shell and gives the rooms lots of character. The designers were careful to emphasize certain details and to hide others in order to give this lost as much character as possible without allowing the architecture to overpower the decor and to take over the space. The result is a loft design like no other.
Soft fabrics, bold colors, furniture with curved lines and various patterns break the straight and harsh lines of the designThroughout this unusual residence there are quite a few unexpected spots from which to admire the viewsThe large custom-built furniture modules hide some of the loft’s service areas, including the laundry roomThe big black unit in the living room also hides another secret: the TVThe bathroom spaces are small, minimalist and defined by a modern aestheticThe kitchen is seamlessly integrated into the open plan volume but stands out and has a slightly raised floorThe white kitchen cabinetry blends into the wall creating a very bright and airy decorThe loft area can be accessed via a staircase made of metal, wood and concreteMood lighting and a variety of stylish fixtures create a very warm and cozy ambiance at nightThe sleeping area is clad in steel and lined with wood and looks very clean and simpleFrom upstairs one can enjoy a wonderful view over the city skylineGlass partitions allow light to enter the bedroom and prevent it from feeling small and cluttered
