The IH Residence is not your typically family home. The reasons for that are numerous so we’re going to focus on a few in just a moment starting with the location. The house is situated in Bundung, Indonesia. It occupies a big site which slopes gently and which offered a lot of space for this project to take advantage of. The studio responsible for this amazing design is andramatin. They completed the residence and everything around it in 2015.
The house has an oversized roof with wide eaves that offer shade and protection from the rainThe main section of the house is surrounded by a reflective poolInside, the living area is very big and has an open and airy layout with full-height windows
The main idea behind the project was to create a modern family home. The team took advantage of the natural topography and the location and came up with a design which is directly influenced by these elements as well as by the climate in the region. One of the first things you’ll notice is the unusual roof of the building. This oversized roof has overhangs that go as far as being 6 meters deep. Their role is to offer shelter and protection from the heavy rainfall as well as from direct sunlight.
The indoor areas and especially the ground floor ones open onto the exterior and engage their surroundingsThe water wraps around the big trees that were present on the site and which were preserved
The house also engages with the site and its surroundings in a really cool and interesting way. The sloping terrain allowed for a series of spaces to be created below the floor level of the main section of the house. They’re mainly a service area and a basement. The house also features several outdoor-oriented functions such as a series of terrain, balconies and reflective pools which surround the living areas and help them transition towards the landscape surrounding the house.
The house also has a big terrace which acts as a second living room and has access to the swimming poolThe poolside pavilion welcomes the outdoors in through its huge openings on all sidesA big dining table for the whole family is part of main social area along with the kitchenSmooth circular columns frame the terraces and create this beautiful walkway along the houseThe sloping terrain was seamlessly incorporated into the design of the house and all its componentsThe deep roof overhangs shelter the house from direct sunlight and rainfallAs the site slopes down, a sunken courtyard is formed around the houseThe ponds add a serene touch to the overall design of the houseThe private areas also enjoy a strong connection to the outdoors and to the swimming pool in particularThe abundance of glass partitions and full-height windows allow natural sunlight to play a very important role in the decorExposed concrete walls and ceilings add a rugged twist to the interior designThe master suite has a very fluid design which gives it an airy and welcoming feel
