Originally built in 1956, this ranch house nestled in the beautiful hills of Los Angeles, California began a new chapter when not so long ago it was renovated and expanded with a brand new second floor. The project was a collaboration between architecture studio Assembledge and interior experts at studio Alexander Design Build.
The house was expanded with a new second floor which is clad in Western Red Cedar boards
The transformation added new spaces and reinvigorated the existing ones with a fresh and modern aesthetic while still being respectful towards the house’s history. The new ground floor design features a big open floor plan with inviting and relaxing social areas that open onto a pool deck framed by tall trees. The kitchen is at the heart of this space and marks the separation point between the common and the private areas of the house.
The upper floor has large windows which wrap around the corners and take advantage of the views
The new roof is angled and asymmetrical, as if it stretches towards the sunlight in the same way tree branches grow instinctively. New large windows and a 30 foot long skylight fill the house with bright natural light during the day and also expose the interior towards the wonderful surrounding landscape. The new design puts a strong emphasis on the harmonious connection between the indoor and the outdoor areas.
The existing fireplace in the living room was refinished and now has a minimalist designThe kitchen sits at the center of the house between the social and the private areasThe custom wood furniture adds a lot of warmth and elegance to the kitchen
As far as the interior design is concerned, it’s instantly noticeable how inviting and relaxing this lovely home is. It’s meant to exude sophistication while also being very comfortable and welcoming. The neutral color palette and overall simplicity of the decor give this place a modern and very airy overall feel. The rooms also have a ton of character thanks to some of the vintage and antique furnishings or details such as the brass fixtures and marble countertops.
The living room seamlessly extends outdoors onto the pool deckThe bathroom looks very stylish thanks to the brass fixturesThe above-ground pool is centered in the backyardThis magnificent bedroom has a gorgeous view thanks to the corner windowsThe old and new elements blend together very beautifully in this design
