Traditional interiors are easy to spot as they have a very specific look. They tend to focus on elegancy and on an overall continuous décor where everything matches everything else. The most commonly used colors are beige and brown with slight variations. An element that is specific to traditional décor, more exactly to living rooms, is the rug. Traditional rugs have an easily distinguishable pattern and they feature a mix of warm colors and intricate patterns.

Rugs, regardless of their style, are a detail that has become unnecessary in most modern decors. However, they have a softness to them that allows them to bring warmth to a room and to create a cozy and more intimate atmosphere. Traditional living rooms also often have fireplaces. It’s a very beautiful detail that makes the whole room stand out.

They are also often defined by the use of robust furniture such as sofas and upholstered armchairs. These are particularly comfortable pieces of furniture and another element that contributes to the overall intimate and inviting atmosphere. Besides the typical architectural details such as the moldings and ceiling roses that some traditional homes still have, their interiors are also characterized by elegant decorations and accessories, including pendant lamps or even chandeliers, artwork on the walls and decorative flowers on the table. Of course, there are variations to these decors and different influences.

The use of stone in the living room is a really great way of creating a nature-inspired design and introducing strong textures into the décor. In this room designed by Virginia Tupker Interiors the stone walls are complemented by a variety of different textures and finishes in subdued and earthy colors. This created diversity without overly complicating the space.

A traditional living room is often defined by a particular type of layout. First of all, it’s a separate room and not a part of an open floor plan. Additionally, you can expect to see a sofa or two and a couple of matching armchairs arranged around a coffee table. Here the arrangement created by Duet Design Group is also framed by a traditional fireplace.

Although wooden floors and exposed ceiling beams are not characteristics of traditional interior designs only, they do give this living room a very authentic and well-balanced look. The traditional fireplace with a TV wall-mounted directly above it is also a combination often seen in similar environments. The team of designers at Markalunas Architecture Group made sure to create a seamless transition between all of these elements.

Studio Historical Concepts gave this traditional living room a very subdued and earthy palette of colors which in turn create a very soothing and comfortable ambiance. The windows are not large as those seen in many modern and contemporary spaces and rather than standing out they feature elegant curtains and shades which allow them to blend in with the surrounding furniture and decorations.

The interior of this living room is very bright and airy as a beach house should be. It has whitewashed brick walls and a light wooden ceiling with white support beams. The herringbone parquet flooring adds a subtle retro vibe to the space, featuring a rather colorful design specific to reclaimed wood surfaces. The windows are large in order to maximize the breezy views and the furniture and decorations have a strong traditional character with a chic mid-century vibe.

Here you can see a lot of different textures being combined and layered in order to give this living room an extra cozy and inviting look. It’s a wonderful strategy employed by studio BDHM design which can also be adapted to suit modern or Nordic-inspired interiors. Elements such as the area rug, accent pillows and the furniture upholstery are complemented by fresh green accents, a subdued wall color and a warm and natural palette of materials.

Each home is different and unique and that needs to be reflected in the way in which the spaces are planned and decorating. Reinventing a space and at the same time making it seem lived-in and timeless is often challenging. Interior designer Alison Kist shows here how such a living room could look like in a traditional home. The palette of colors is based on warm neutrals complemented by green accents and there are a lot of different textures and finishes in here which complement each other and come together to give this living room ton of character and to make this house feel like a forever home.

Simplicity can also make a living room look amazing, especially in a predominantly modern or contemporary environment. Mix a few rustic or traditional details into the décor and the whole space transforms into a wonderfully inviting and pleasant area very much like this stylish living room created by studio AP Design House. The key here was to balance out the white and light color accents with soft textures and the occasional eye-catching detail.

Of course, the opposite can also work. Adding lots of details and infusing it with various little accents, different colors, textures and finishes can add more character to its design and make it feel more like home. In such a space the color of the walls is usually a neutral and light shade of beige or a similar tone which adds warmth to the room without standing out or being bold in any way. This in turn allows all the attention to fall on the furniture pieces and the decorations. This space designed by studio Ambiance Interior Design is a nice example.

There are also a lot of distinct details that make this particular living room stand out and when put together they really do make this feel like a very warm and inviting home. To simplicity this, the room is your typical collection of matching sofas, accent chairs, storage modules and various decorations such as lamps, an area rug and wall art but every one of these elements has a story to tell and lots of small little details to show off. This is a design by studio Harding & Read.

The window treatments tell a lot about a space. There are a lot of details which are present in a traditional living room which have altogether been removed in modern and contemporary interiors. Although they’re purely decorative, they do play an important role in the overall scheme of things, ultimately being the details that make the room come to life. The light fixtures, furniture and rugs have a similar effect.

Although traditional living rooms don’t typically have large windows, that doesn’t make space like this one any less authentic. This home interior designed by Mary Cook shows a beautiful blend of modern and traditional elements with an emphasis on the latter, showcasing lots of elegant little details but also making the most of the beautiful panorama which can be admired through the huge windows.

Small living rooms are often the most charming ones, as beautifully shown here by interior design studio Pinney Designs. This gorgeous little space is centered around a fireplace and manages to incorporate two small sofas facing each other and two comfortable armchairs. The design of the space is quite symmetrical, featuring side tables, lamps and open shelves on each side, a plushy area rug at the center and a TV just above the fireplace.

The fireplace is not always positioned at the center of the room and even though its location is sometimes less than optimal there are still many ways in which you can make the most of its presence. By simply placing a couple of comfortable chairs in front or to the side you can create a cozy sitting area and a perfect spot for reading. In the case of this home designed by studio Period Architecture Ltd. This fireplace nook seamlessly transitions into the main living room area.
