Ceilings are not exactly the main detail that you pay attention to when you first enter a house, but they do have a major impact in maintaining a sense of freedom and space. Everybody knows that these are vital if you want to create that particularly welcoming feeling! A room with low ceilings may give you the impression of living in a small bird cage.

If we were to talk about the psychological effects, it is said that low ceilings often provide a low state of mind. But this is another story. What we know for sure is that they were always a challenge for interior designers. If you ever encounter this problem, we have some useful tips for you.

1. Try uplighting

This is one of the best solutions if you want to make your ceiling look higher. Don’t be afraid to use your walls! Wall lighting fixtures will create a warm, cozy atmosphere so that you can enjoy your home to the fullest.

2. Be careful what kind of furniture you choose

Usually, when we choose the furniture for our home, we tend to make decisions based on appearance, without considering functionality. Low profile furniture is perfectly designed for low ceiling houses, because it increases the space between the ceiling and the floor, making the room feel more spacious and breezy.

3. Use glass walls or floor to ceiling windows

Just like a mirror, glass has the property of reflecting things around. That’s why a glass wall or a large window will increase the sense of space and will also provide natural daylight. Brighter is always better, especially in terms of interior design.

4. Decorate your walls with vertical stripes

I don’t particularly enjoy decorating my walls with stripes, but sometimes it may be necessary. You can choose between using wallpaper, or, if you are brave enough (and talented), you can simply paint them by yourself.

5. Raise doors to ceiling height

I bet you never thought about that! Generally speaking, interior doors have almost the same size. A floor to ceiling doormay seem strange at first. However, we must admit that this is a brilliant idea to create the illusion of a generous space.

6. Use glossy paint

Glossy paint is rarely used on walls and ceilings, but rather to decorate different pieces of furniture, especially coffee tables. A major drawback would be the fact that it must be applied on a perfect shaped surface, or else it will highlight all the imperfections.

7. Hang picture frames a bit higher to the ceiling

For a great result use vertical framed pictures or paintings. The walls will look taller, so the distance between the ceiling and floor will also seem higher.

8. Paint the ceiling lighter than the walls

Lighter ceilings create an imposing effect and shape the illusion of a large and bright space. A dark colored floor will also do the trick!

9. Hang your curtains as close to the ceiling as possible.

Long curtains will always emphasize length. Even if the windows are small, floor-to-ceilings curtains will unveil magnificent features of the room, that you were not aware of.

10. Paint a diagonal on your wall

Another great tip on how to create the illusion of a high ceiling is to paint a diagonal on one of the walls. It will open up the space, and change the perspective. For the best result start from the center of the wall and end it on the top left corner of the room (or the top right corner, depending what wall you decide to use).

11. Avoid using pendant lamps

Pendant lamps are specially designed for high ceilings, mainly because they make the ceiling look closer to the floor. If you have low ceilings, we advise you to use flush mounted lighting, even though these may not have such an alluring design.

12. Avoid clutter

Visual clutter will lower the ceilings. Remove any extra detail or piece of furniture. A simple interior design will allow an extensive view, so get ready to use every storage space you have!

13. Use a bold floor rug

If people can’t be impressed by your ceiling, draw their attention with a bold floor rug. In fact, you don’t even have to use a rug, just try to keep the interest at the floor level by using different kind of patterns.

14. High shelves will trick the eye

It doesn’t matter what you decide to keep on them, books, decorative items, pictures with the loved ones, if you use them, the wall will appear taller, and so the ceiling.

15. Tall accessories are more than welcomed

Candles, braches, flowers, whatever other tall accessories you have in your home will be useful in this case. Remember about contrasts and use whatever you can to create them. For example, you can decorate the table by using a small round vase, with tall slim branches.
