An original and unique interior is defined not only by the pieces used to make it but also by the ability of finding new ways of including them in the décor and ways of repurposing all sorts of items. It’s important to be creative and to think outside of the box. You can repurpose and recycle almost anything. Today we’re going to focus on the yardstick. Apparently, it’s well-defined item with a specific use but this doesn’t mean it can’t be used for something else. Here are a few examples that demonstrate that.
If you have some old storage crates that are not exactly in their best shape, you can just dismantle them, keep the useful parts and replace the rest with yardsticks. It’s simple and it’s creative. All you need for this project is some stain, wood screws and some paint. The paint is foe the bottom of the crate. You can also add or replace the handles.{found on meridianroad}.
You can also use old yardsticks for another similar project. This is a serving tray and, as you can see, the bottom is composed of yardstick portions. They have been glued to the bottom of the tray and used to create an apparently random pattern. It’s another simple yet creative and useful way of repurposing yardsticks.
An old yardstick can also be used to create a hanger. It’s an extremely simple project and all you have to do is figure out the dimensions you want for the hanger, cut the yardstick and attach some hooks to it. Then also add the hardware to help you mount it on the wall or, if you want, attach it to the interior of a cabinet.{found on houzz}.
This project requires a little more time and more resources than the previous ones. It’s a yardstick buffet with the front area covered with old yardsticks. So if you have a cabinet that is structurally strong and still usable but that lacks the charm in terms of appearance, you can give it a makeover and you can use this example as inspiration.{found on cornerhouseblog}.
You can also use yardsticks to create an original and interesting backsplash for the kitchen countertops. First make the measurements and cut the yardsticks to size and then cut a piece of cardboard the length of the cabinets. Make sure the height is that of four yardsticks. Then glue the yardsticks to the cardboard and sand them. Add a few coats of sealer and attach them to the wall.{found on ashleyannphotography}.
If you’re not really big on this type of projects you can try something simpler and smaller. For example, you can make a yardstick box. Cut them into 15’’ pieces for the side and 5’’ pieces for the smaller parts. Glue the sides and use nails to keep them secure. Then glue and nail the bottom and come up with an idea for the top.{found on site}.
It’s very common for people to have old pieces of furniture in the house or in the garage. If you have an old chair or stool that still looks strong and durable but doesn’t look that nice on the outside, maybe you can give it a makeover. You could make a new seat and you can use yardsticks to make it. The result will be a unique, vintage piece.{found onellenscreativepassage}.
So far we’ve only presented makeover projects and a simple design for a storage box. We’ve now moving on to projects that involve decorative pieces. For example, you could use some old yardsticks to make a lovely starburst mirror. You’ll need a handsaw, 22 yardsticks, a round mirror and wood glue. Cut the yardsticks to the lengths you want and attach them to the mirror.{found on bhg}.
You can also use a yardstick to make a nice jewelry peg rack. It’s a project that takes less than an hour to complete. You’ll need a hammer, a yardstick, a small nail and cup hooks or eye hooks. Make holes into the wood to make it easier to screw in the hooks. Then also use screws to attach it to the wall when it’s done.{found on site}.
A similar idea would be to make a coat rack. You would need more than a yardstick. You’ll also need a piece of wood to glue the yardstick onto. Stain the base and yardstick after you glue them together and then add some hooks. Attach the rack to the wall and you’re done. You can also attach it to a cabinet door.{found on boveebird}.
