10 Chic DIY Burlap Projects

You can make lots of things with burlap. It might not be a fancy material to work with but it has a special charm. It can give your home a very chic vintage touch and that can be done easily and without much effort. All you need to do is take a look at some of these DIY projects and maybe you’ll find something that you like.

Dining table.

You can easily make burlap placemats. These ones are 14″ x 20″ and if you want to make similar ones you’ll need 2 yards of burlap fabric. It has to fray easily so that you can get the fringe as shown in the pictures. If the color is not exactly what you had in mind then you can stain it. Apply a little clear fabric glue to the underside of the placemats if you don’t want them to over-fringe.{found on thefinalboardingcall}.

You could also make burlap table numbers. You’ll need recycled cardboard, cardstock paper, burlap, paint, a paint brush and glue. Cut the materials to size and then lightly draw or stencil the numbers onto the burlap piece. Apply all-purpose glue to the back of the burlap and center it on the cardstock paper. Press until it stays in place. Then use cardboard to make a standing triangle and glue the cardstock and burlap piece to one of the sides.{found on weddingwindow}.

Another nice idea would be to make monogramed artwork to display into your home. You’ll need one white foam core board, a glue stick, an exacto knife, painter’s pens, a ruler, spray adhesive, a staple gun or a hot glue gun, one yard of burlap, decorative ribbon, plush pins and a stencil. Cut the foam board in half and glue them together. Cut the burlap in half. Then fold it in half and glue it onto the board. Cut out a stencil for the monograms and trace the letters onto the burlap. Curtains.

For the kitchen, you could make chic burlap curtains. You’ll need two yards of burlap. Cut the piece in half long ways, iron it and sew a straight seem at the top for the curtain rod pocket. Then tie it up with ribbon and admire your creation. It’s very simple and looks very chic.{found on spenafamily}.

Here’s how you can make a table runner. You’ll need jute garden webbing, a hot glue gun or fabric craft glue, a sewing machine, red cotton thread and scissors. First, cut 6 lengths or jute webbing of the same size. Arrange the long strips side by side and then weave a shorter strip across one end. Secure each strip with glue. Continue weaving the shorter strips and then secure the other end with glue. Trim the edges and sew a hem all the way around.{found on taradennis}.

Utensil holders.

If you’re planning to impress your guests when they come over for dinner, here’s a nice way to do it. You could make these utensil holders. You’ll need burlap, paint and a stencil brush, twine or ribbon and a tag. Cut a piece of burlap and place the stencil about 4’’ from the bottom of the fabric. Tape down the edges and paint in between the lines. Then fold in the bottom edge and glue the sides together. Glue a piece of twine or ribbon to the back and tie it around the front. In case you’re planning a romantic but still casual dinner, then you could make a special decoration for this event. The great news is that it’s a simple project with simple materials. Take some burlap fabric and cut 4 rectangular pieces. Then take twine and put it in the desire space. stencil the letters on each piece of burlap and then use clothespins to attach them to the twine.{image from here}.

Nobody likes to have to look everywhere for a pen or pencil when they need. So why not make a lovely pencil holder to solve the problem. We have the perfect design for you. You’ll need burlap, ribbon and some pins. The main item that you’ll use is a soup can. Cover the can with burlap using glue and then add the ribbon and any other decorations you want.{found on site}.

Another simple project would be a burlap message board. You just need a piece of burlap and a frame. You can glue the burlap to the frame or you can use nails or staples. The frame can come from an old mirror for example. Then mount the board on the wall and enjoy.{found on ourbluefrontdoor}.

A burlap basket would also be lovely and it would also be great for storage. To make it you’ll need 1 3/8 yd. of burlap, 1 3/8 yd. stiff interfacing and jute or rope. Cut a strip of fabric, a circle and four rectangular pieces. Also, cut a strip of interfacing. Lay the interfacing on the burlap. Then stitch the ends of your strip of fabric together with a seam. Add the belt loops and turn each of the short edges under and stitch them. Place the remaining two pieces between the two loops. Add the twine and you’re done.{found on cheapchichome}.
