Open floor plans bring a lot of benefits, the most appreciated of all being the fact that they visually increase the spaciousness of an area and allow us to make the most of our homes. Still, telling apart the different zones that make up an open space id often difficult without the usual wall barriers. But that’s what paint is for. It’s one of the many ways in which you can separate the zones that share the same floor plan.

The kitchen and the dining room often share the same space. To make them feel like separate spaces without putting a wall in between, one solution is to add a little bit of character to one of the areas with paint. The kitchen, for example, has that quirky corner that defines it.

The most common type of open floor plan combines the living area, dining space and the kitchen. Each of them can stand out with its own color theme. The living room in this case is defined by the green accent wall, the kitchen features a classy combination of white and brown and the dining area is mostly white.

Create strong contrasts using paint to make certain areas pop. This blue kitchen is really gorgeous. It feels very cheery and has a fun and fresh vibe plus, it really stand out given the raw gray décor that surrounds it.

You don’t need a super large floor plan to include two or more distinct zones. For example, a bedroom can include the sleeping area plus a cozy seating or reading nook. You can use different paint colors to visually separate the spaces.

Corner spaces such as a seating area are easy to define using color. Use a combination of two contrasting tones for the adjacent walls and repeat the same colors in the form of accessories and furniture.

On the other hand, you can also use similar colors and shades if you don’t want the contrast to be strong and to also create a harmonious décor throughout. The wall closets to the living space or seating area can be a bit darker than the rest of the space.

And there’s not even necessary to paint an entire wall a different color to separate the spaces. If your open space living room has a fireplace than simply paint the that portion a different color.

You’ll probably prefer soft, pastel colors for the bedroom so if you have a window nook, for example, surround it with walls featuring a color different from the one used for the rest of the walls and ceiling but still found in the overall palette used for the room.
